He eventually won by a whopping 35 seconds only to miss out on h is transfer to the Invitational because of rear wheel problems which couldn't be corrected in time. Pet Evens didn't ride as many of the events as he usually does, possibly because of the extreme heat both days. On Sunday, however, he won two GP cla...., the 250 and the 200, as well as the Lightweight Production. In the 250 GP, he aced out Howard Lynggard by a slim margin and oh, was Lynggard unhappy!' WILVERT BAGS TOP GP WIN Photos by Buzz Baty EL TORO, CAL, Sept. 12, 1971 - A month ago, AFM-LA Chapter head .Jim Manning was beaming in anticipation for this weekend's Cycle Guide GP because better than 1500 had showed up for the Buco GP. Well, today, Manningspent most of the day cruising about the Orange County International Raceway's road racing course with more than just a big grin as approximately 2500 riders and spectators showed up for the two-day event. The racing was fantastic for the two days, but the heat took its ton on many of the machines competing. Dick Hammer, for example, had trouble holding down leads both days and found himself being bumped from a first overall several times when the heat got to his machines. Ralph White showed up with the new Kawasaki Mach IV, three-cylinder 750 and gave a good show before it, too, had troubles on Saturday. A quick trip to The team of Hummer/Gulbransen led the team of Ozzieauer/Garnett before missing a turn and dropping back to second. The sidecar team NO.1 then ,began to close up the lost ground but on lap eight their throttle stuck open down the straightaway and they tried everything to slow down, but missed turn on and finally spun out at the end of the straight - out for the race. Ozzieauer/Garnett went on to win. the shop Saturday night and the machine again reappeared Sunday and White came through with a win in the Open class of the 251-1000 National Production race on it. Pat Evans doubled up with wins Sunday as he topped the 250 GP c1asa and Howard Lynggard and also led the field in the 0-200 GP go. A surprising effort came from Rod Murufas in the 201-1000 Consolation. Rod, mounted on a 250cc Ossa, rode a fantastic race with his "dirt" style and pulled through a 35-second win ahead of Bruce Haugh on a 750cc Norton. He broke to the lead in the Open Invitational - the final race of the weekend - and led through eight laps before sliding out near tum 3.
