SPEEDWA YCHAMPIONSHIPS being the first one out of the gate in every one of his events. Event number 20, scheduled to be the last race, was no exception, as Steve charged off the line like a shot, hotly pursued by Sonny Nutter, Bill Cody and, with an unusu.al poor start, Rick Woods. Rick slipped by 'Wild Bill' going into the first tum, then attempted to go outside of Sonny, (who had been ridin~ one of Rick's bikes most of the night) making contact with the Topanga Flash, falling and being dragged for about twenty feet, machine and all. With Rick in the middle of the track, completely immobile and in obvious great pin, the starter made a wise snap decision and stopped the race, in the interest of Rick's wel1 being. After even oxygen failed to restore Rick to ful1 awreness, the race was re-started without him and once again it was Steve Bast right into the lead, which he held to the finish and the Championship. Sonny and Bill, meanwhile, were having the battle of the nigh t for second spot, with Sonny just getting the nod. Sonny's effort in the final event was sufficient to put him into fourth place for the second straight year, w~i1e Bill ended up in fifth spot. Rick Woods' DNF put him into a tie with Mike Bast for second and aIter Trying to extend his winning streak which began Wednesday night at Bakersfield, Mike Caruso found himsetf going the wrong way at Costa Mesa Friday night. Harlan Bast (82) manages to slip by but Bruce Hasserot appears to be in a difficult situation. s.,s '.s"••" .1.6• • • ,••r4 "He, Mr. Dealer" We carryall types of insurance coverage - garage liability fire - theft & dealer bonds S." Off the line, Guy was able to grab the lead and while there was much passing action going on behind him, he kept his cool enough to not let that bother him and keep the lead all the way to the finish. In the Scratch Main ~vent, it was Steve and Mike Bast, Ruben Benites and Bill Cody orr the .line with Cody on the outside and Steve on the inside. As the gate went up, it was Steve on the inside and Mike on the outside with the crowd expecting Mike to pull away when from out of the blue and clear out came Cody. Cody's hard charge from the outside seemed to rattle Mike a little as Cody cut to the inside to take the lead and Steve slid under him to move into the nuber two slot. Despite questions from almost everyone at trackside, Rick insisted that he was sure he wan ted to ride. Although the familiar Woods style was definitely absent, the speed, determination and just plain guts were present in abundance and Rick managed to hold Mike off to nail down second spot in the Championship. After over-extending himself somewhat in the run-off, Rick was unable to walk out to center track for the trophy presentation, despite the presence of three very attractive, bikini clad young ladies.
