Bakersfield Season Ends By Sportphoto BAKERSFIELD, CAL., Sept. 8, 1971 The last regular meet of the year had plenty going for it in the way of action. You'd never know that in just three days most of these riders will be back for the California State Championship by watching the hard riding taking place on the Kern County Fairgrounds oval. About the wildest race ever seen here was the Scratch Consolation, which saw a complete re-start called for after almost a lap and a half had already been run. Bill Cody jumped right qut into the lead, hotly pursued by Steve Bast, Larry (Cont'd. from page 30) eosT4 MESA with a lot of passing as Dick Brewer topped the pack to take the win. Dub Ferrel had done a good job of cu tting his way through the pack to move into second place, but he tried just a little too hard to catch Brewer and lost it in the comer. John Flanders had no place to go and threw his machine down in an attempt to avoid a collision, but it was a little too late and they connected, putting them both out of the race. Ron Taylor kept it all together for second followed by Ralph Castor and Kurt Lewis. ,; Both division III Mains were filled with spills and crashes and the first one even had to be restarted, but coming , out victorious was Bob Hardison in the first and James Poe winning the second. Following the Intermission, the usual team match race was foregone to bring back the two-man match race. Tonight's contest was between Steve Bast and Mike KonIe. The irony of it all was that in the last Scratch heat race before the intermission, • the program had pitted Bast and Konle against each other (not too good a job of program planning) with Konle winning. The fans had the feeling that it would just be are-run. They had forgotten ton consult Steve' Bast, as the gate went up, Steve took off like a shot and came out of the comer leading and in a two-lap race, that about wraps it up. (Results on page'32) Shaw and Bruce Haserot when, going into the first turn for the second time Bill overdid it a bit and went down at the head of the pack. With no place to go, Steve laid it down, making contact with Bill and Larry went to the outside and went down, then Bruce came up and attempted to avoid three fallen riders and machines around the outside and instead made contact with the wall and fell. Somehow, in the mixup a footpeg leot hooked under the front of Bruce's helmet, and the machine was still running! Bruce was getting dragged all over the track until Larry managed to extricate Bruce from his somehwat uncomfortable position. After a great deal of prying and banging, the race got under way once again and it "Ligh lOing" Larry all the way, followed by Bruce and Steve. Wild Bill was right in the middle of the action until the last turn of the third lap when, while still crossed up, he caught a whole bundle of very unexpected traction and had the front end come up and over, putting him out of the race. The match races were a study in falling, as in both the regular Feature and in the Special Match Race,. the rider in second place with a last ditch attempt to pass, went down instead. Larry Moon took an immediate lead over Bruce Haserot in the Feature, but just couldn't get away as Bruce was right on his rear wheel all the way. Going into the very last tum, Bruce went in super-hot and fell, giving the race to Larry. The other match race was are-match of last week's pair-off between promoter Digger Helm and announcer Bruce 'Thud' Flanders. Digger charged right out into the lead, just like last week. However, the change from last week occurred in the last turn of the third lap when, Bruce lived right up to his nickname and fell attempting to repeat last week's pass of Digger in this same turn. This puts the score at one win each and it's a shame that the rubber match will have to wait until nex t season. (Results on page 32) Choice of a Chi ... I, 1971 For the second straight week, a Gresham was in the winner's circle for the Han.dicap Main here at the Kern County Fairgrounds oval. Last week it was a 1-2 affair, with Steve showing older brother Jim the way home, but tonigh t it was the elder Gresham all the way in a wire to wire effort, to put the cap on an undefeated evening in the handicap portion of the program. Although Sonny Nutter strove mightily to overC9me his 50 yard line handicap, it just wasn't in the cards and Sonny had to settle for second spot, in front .of Jim Doron, Steve Gresham, Stu Morley and Kurt Lewis. Mike Curoso, Bruce Haserot and Sumner McKnight put on a three-way hammer and tongs battle for the' lead for the first two laps of the Handicap Consolation, until Bruce encountered a slight problem and feU in front of Mike. This put Sumner into a lead position he never lost to a hard charging Larry Shaw. 'Lightning Larry' was being pressed in turn by Rick Woods and Dave Gifford. Rick and Dave were in this event, somewhat unusual for both, due to a strange occurrence in their handicap semi. Coming out of the first turn, while still crossed up, Rick caught a whole bunch of unexpected traction and did a gigantic wheelie, then fell directly in fron t of Dave. Dave, with nowhere to go, reacted instan t1y and did a masterful job of laying his machine down to avoid the fallen Woods. Promoter Digger Helm and announcer Bruce Flanders came to the starting gate in a special match race that was billed as the race of the century. Some wits tad different ideas, as one quipped, "This is really going to be great, a part time second division rider and a has-been class Crider." Nevertheless, the race went on as planned and Digger charged righ t out into the lead and held off "Thurd" in classic class C short track form. The race was originally scheduled faT two laps but the crowd wouldn't go for that and yelled until they got both riders to agree to a four lap match. Perhaps Digger should have stood firm for two laps as he held the lead until the third lap when '01 Thurd' moved around and into the lead which he held to the checkered. A sigh t both riders were very happy to see, both were more than a bit winded.
