.f' , .... I SCOTT WINS THREE IN ONE WEEKEND Photos by Dan Mahony lancaster S1: LANCASTER, CAL., Sept. 2,.1971 Once a year the cycle fans in the Lancaster-Palmdale area go to the annual Antelope VaUey Fair in Lancaster. This year they came in larger numbers than ever before. The AMA sanctioned short track races were the opening night attraction and over 5,000 people jammed their way in to see Gary Scott and Terry Dorsch battle their way into the final for a showdown in the Main Event. Dorsch and his 250 Triumph chalked up four straigh t wins before moving into the Main Even t. Scott came into the imal with three wins and one defeat. In the Trophy Dash Scott feU off trying to catch Dorsch and was run over by another machine. This did not keep the best Junior in the nation from the final as he bounced up like a rubber ball to once again keep·the thought going that Gary Scott is near invincible. Scott and Dorsch went at it in the final but it was Scott in front off the line and Dorsch spent the rest of the race trying to catch up on the tricky oval. Late in the race Ed Mitchell passed Dorsch to gain seco'.1d. Mitchell spen t the entire evening keeping the crowd jumping with his come-from-behind wheel-stuffing rides and it paid off in the feature. MitcheU is from Palmd, ale and became the crowd favorite against the boys from the big city to the South. Palmdale's Ron Powell ran fourth with· Lancaster's Tom Horton in fifth. Three local riders in the first five gave the fans something to shout about and look forward to next year. This was the iuth year in a row the AMA professionals have gone to Lancaster for the annual Fair. Each year the crowd is larger than the previous year. They have added se~til:'g th~ee times but the people were stIli left With standing room only for this one. The super-short dirt oval kept the action going from start to finish and the . country fair surroundings, plus the $900 Gary Scott won overall three consecutive nights white Terry Dorsch (6&Al had to settle for next best several times. had been eliminated due to crashes. ~ Scott grabbed the lead early in the final with Dorsch right on his rear wheel. The two soon stretch it out over the rest of the field to make it a two rider race the rest of the way. Van Leeuwen worked his way to fourth place by the end of the third lap but could never quite catch Wirth who scored a third place finish. Dave Bostrom, out of racing cycles for many years, returned and both Bostrom brothers made the final. Dave finished ninth with Paul dropping out early in the event, taking 12th. Scrambler Tom White (Yam) finally got his first professional win in t.he Novice fInal. He led all the way WIth Denny Carlson figh ting off a raft of other 250 riders to take second. Scott Brelsford came up with engine troubles iil the heat race and dropped out. A lot of fast wrenching was applied but the machine again died on the starting line for the Novice Semi. (Results on page 28) Ascot 11: GARDENA, CAL., Sept. 3, 1971 Junior Gary Scott got his chance to try on the Experts for size for the fIrst time this year in an Ascot TT event. It paid off with a Trophy Dash and Main E"ent win but the two did not come easy. Scott and his Triumph were relegated back to a third place fInish in the heat race that found Terry Dorsch (Tri) and Paul Bostrom (Tri) putting the old one-two on the young hotshot. . Point leader Skip Van Leeuwen (Tri) fell off in the second heat race trying to beat Eddie Wirth (Tri) arid Don Dudek. The Dutchman then got back up to gain a back row start in the semi. Skip made it look easy, coming from the back to take the lead on the first lap and on for the win. But, again, it was another back row start in the final. The second big bike heat found three actual starts and a total' of five riders falling off and crashing into each other. By the ti!!te the third start came about Mike Haney (Tri) and Tommy Sawyer Corona 11: CORONA, CAL., Sept. 4, 1971 - The third and final three straight nights of racing wound up at Corona Raceway for the second TT of the season. Gary Scott, the ace Triumph rider in the JohnID MOTO·CROSSlEATHERS Competition proven for the mini-racer. too. For brochure and complete information; contact: Junior division, won the Main Event for the second straight time and became ~e second rider in ten years to win three m a TOW on the same weekend. The new TT course proved exciting in the opener two weeks ago but few were ready for the Main Event duel staged by Scott and Terry Dorsch in the 15-lap final.. Dorsch was the first man off the line and stayed there for the first ten laps. Scott was never more than one bike length back and most of the ti~e was right alongside. Terry made no mls~akes the first ten times and that kept him m the lead in one of the best TT duels ever. Then on lap 11 he opened a gap, just a small one, and Scott went sliding through for the lead and onto the even tual win. The same thing happened to Dorsch in the heat race as he again was leading Scott only to make one mistakeJ a mistake that also cost him the heat race win. Scott was brillia'1t all evening, breaking his own one lap record in time trials and then coming back to break the heat race, trophy dash and finally, the Main Event marks. A perfect clean sweep for the 19-year-old from Ontario! Former IT champ Skip Van Leeuwen worked his way up to third place before the finish of the torrid pace set by Scott and Dorsch closed out the final. Skip was in the middle of the pack early in the race before breaking loose for a closing third. Dave Bostrom ran fourth with Eddie Wirth in fifth. Ron Powell challenged Tom White in both the heat and the final but could not hold the charger on the Bultaco with White winning both and taking his second Main Event win in 24 hours over the last long weekend 0.£ the year.. . Corona will host a IT agam thiS Saturday night but will play host to the many returning half milers in two weeks, on Saturday night, Sept. 17. The new IT track was much faster this time as the infield is now packing down and the high jump is smoother. The action again proved that Corona has th.e best IT traCK in the Riverside area since the long ago days of the famous De An,za Park, the first IT track in the nation to come up with a jump on each and every lap.
