Now things are getting interesting, maybe w well have a duel. Oh-oh, there goes Kel Z and he's opening a good 15-bike lead ~ over Malloy and on the oval too.. There's ~ no wa1 that Ginger will be able to make () up cnougO time on Carruthers in the infield to offset that much speed. But, Ginger is not a beginner either and in two laps is right back up there and retakes the lead. Now Carruthers decides to really get serious about this whole thing. He's up beside Ginger in that comer, but can't get past. Wait, there he goes, hell get him now. Wow! he couldn't do it; Malloy's still in front. What a race I Half the race and they're side by side t The last lap. Carruthers' will let out all the stops now. He's going to blast righ t by him. He's tucking in going out onto the oval and now he's going to pull the old slingshot trick. Wait. Malloy's still in front, Carrothers can't get around. Wow! Malloy wins it by half a bike length! It's such a close race that hardly i re Ken Roberts. Ginger Molloy pulled the upset of the year in the lightweight Junior/Expert match Saturday. He beat Kel Carruthers. anybody noticed the rest of the field. Cal Rayborn, who rides_ the other 250 Yamaha on the Vesco team, is third. Art Baumann rides still another Yamaha into· fourth. The feat of the day is DuHamel's fifth on the Kawasaki single. In sixth, Floridian Ray Hempstead has spent the entire race chasing DuHamel but did not quite catch him. In the victory circle, Carruthers is excited as he E:ongratulates Malloy. It was a thrilling race and Kel seems to be more thrilled than anyone. Their average speed for the race is 104.548, about the same as Dave Aldana's winning speed in the 750 race last year. Kel and Ginger talk over the race and as Kel comments about trying to get around Ginger on the last lap and fmding that Ginger has more horses than he has, Ginger's expression is about like the mousc's that just ate the cat. him. Roberts kept the two leaders in sigh t the whole distance, but just dido't have the speed to c10sc the gap. Wakefield was so in tense on catching the flying Californian that at one point he overshot the fll"st tum and went off the course, losing several positions. He put forth a tremendous effort and repassed Roberts before the finish to regain sccond. Lane averaged 105.426 mph, a new record for the event. By Don Woods Dixie Cycle News ESTABOGA, ALA., Sept. 4, 1971 Mike Lane and Ron Wakefield topped off the s,weet Kawasaki championship victory the day before it took place by taking a one-two sweep in the 76-mile event for Junior riders. Ken Roberts rode his 350 Yamaha to third. The two Kawasaki riders were hardly teammates and had a tremendous duel during the race. Wakefield led the first three laps when rain started to fall and the race was stopped.
