qdle Gjive; AMA ADOPTS OIL WARNING FLAG FOR ROAD RACES By Papa Wealey ~lightly GJrreverertt CPoop Ralph White may be riding the 750cc Kawasaki Mach IV at the Cycle Guide GP Saturday and Sunday; though it is $till unofficial, our $ource is pretty reliable and isn't wrong too often... If that i$n't enough for you road racing buffs, try this one on for size: Phil Read (you've heard of him, haven't you), will be out to beat America's best at Ontario on Oct. 17 on a beefed up Kawasaki HIR from Monotrack Engineering; he flatly states "If Kel Carruthers can win over there, then so can I"... another quick note: Steve Froschaur made his appearance on the AMA Road Racing circuit Sunday at Talladega on a sponsored ride from Wes Cooley of the ACA... year: he will miss at least the first three Trans-AMA events since he will be at the Isle of Man doing his 15DT thing... * * ... Some intere$ting notes on the Grand National Championship race: Jim Rice has picked up points in each one of the last 13 AMA Nationals (this doesn't include Talladega so check the resul ts to see if he made it 14 or not) ...Dick Mann (also not including Talladega) has scored 439 of a possible 465 total points in road racing this. year. -. The AMA has adopted a red and yellow oil warning flag similar to that used at road racing events in Europe. It will be conspicuous as a 30 x 30 inch yellow flag with three two-inch red stripes, used at road races o.nly to indicate that oil has been spilled on the course. AMA Director of Professional Racing Bill Boyce states, "The yellow flag used to warn a rider of an obstruction on the course is not sufficient as a warning for oil, because it usually causes the rider to look up and ahead of his machine. In the future the yellow warning flag will still be used to warn a rider of an obstruction, bu t if he sees red stripes on the flag he will know to look down toward the surface for spilled oil." ONTAR 10 MOTOCROSS Included in the week of motorcycle activities at Ontario Motor Speedway in October there will be a pro motocross on Saturday, Oct. 16. The $2,100 purse will be split for the 250cc and Open class. As a professional event, AMA professional licenses will be required. Licensed riders may enter the day of the event, but no licenses will be issued on . the spot. In addition, closed pits will be enforced with non-competing participants required to have AMA mechanic's licenses and be in proper pit attire. License inquiries should be addressed to the AMA, 5655 N. High St., Worthington, Ohio, 4308-5, immediately. REGION * * * Motocrosser Bob Grossi is still recuperating from his spill up at Mammoth Mountain MX last June, but he says he'll be following part of the Trans·AMA circuit "to get back into shape;" his arm is still in a caste but that hasn't stopped him from riding around a bit on the beach near his Santa Cruz, Calif., home; he plans to ride a.t Saddleback on Dec. 5 against the Europeans... * * * Diane Connoly has been suspended from active scrambles competition for about half·a-year for breaking a strict Powder Puff rule - that is, you're not supposed to ride two on a bike; we hope it's a bouncin' baby boy, Diane... * * * Jeff Wright, along with all the other Rickman riders, is still up in the air about the. recen t BSA involvement; however, Steen's has still come through with a prototype 175cc Rickman which Jeff took out to a remote section of the desert last weekend to tryout; he says that if it is as powerful as the European developers say it is, he'll be out for an overall win in the desert with it... * * * _ _ DISTRIC: T BOUNDARY _REGION BoUNDAI<'( The AMA's number one motocross plater, Dick BUrleson, will have a very difficult time retaining the honor this Competition Congress Sets Deadline The 1971 national meeting of the AMA's Competition Congress.is rapidly nearing. All representatives (see list at the righ t) must submit their written proposals and rule changes to the AMA home office in Worthington, Ohio, no later than Oct. 15. Local AMA members who wish to submit new proposals or rul~ changes are urged to contact their representative as quickly as possible. Representing the professional riders and not listed with the other representatives appearing on this page are seven National Championship Circuit competitors. Royal Sherbet covers the East, Neil Keen the Midwe$t and J ody Nicholas the West. In addition, national reps include Gene Romero, Jim Rice, Dick Mann and Mert Lawwill. All AMA members have at least one represen tative who will be attending the Congress late this year.
