Reno.,~~~.~dway GJQ.d~ilent ... RENO, NEV., Aug. 19,1971 -It was a dark and stonny night; and with th~ "cushion tt track almost as soft as cement, races were not exactly scintillating. It would not, how~v~r, b~ ov~rly pr~sumptiv~ to say that th~ rac~ were exciting, as most events were very clo~ and som~what b~tt~r ftIl~d than usual. Young John Di~u, in his s~cond w~~k of racing sp~dway, start~d th~ Main Ev~nts with an impr~ssiv~ win in th~ Handicap Consolation. H~ l~d from his o start and won by s~v~1 I~ngths ova Alan Christian, anotha 0 start~r. Conv~rt~d sportsman rida K~n Wood did a v~ry fin~ job to win th~ Handicap Main ah~ad of Gus Laua, who couldn't quil~ ov~rcom~ his 50·yard handicap. Th~ rac~ was quit~ clos~ and it s~~m~d as if J ~ Fitzpatrick would win from his dubious 20 yard start, but h~ bang~d around a Iitll~ too much and l~t Lau~r and C~cil Oswald by. . Th~ Scratch Consolation Main was won by John Cunningham, ch~a~d on by his ov~rly·garralous fri~nds. H~ rod~ smoothly and l~d from th~ start. Again, Fitzpatrick was charging hard until h~ bump~d bars too hard with Milt Iv~rson and s~~m~d to los~ inter~st. Fr~ddi~ Ortiz wound up with s~cond by staying cool and out of troubl~. The big one, the Scratch Main, was won by Gus Lauer to the deligh t of the fans. He rode hard, smooth, and fast to triumph over Dav~ Gifford. Th~ two riders were nip'n'tuck throughout th~ event, and w~r~ aided in ~xcitement by John Fishburn, wbo was following right b~hind. Stu Morley, who normally is a top contender, was obviously suffering from pain incurred in his handicap h~at. H~ took a terrifying spill and then was run over, and ~vinc~d consid~rabl~ "hair" in continuing the evening's International Sport Cycle Expositions, Inc., promot~rs of the annual San Francisco motorcycle sbow, have announced a change of date for th~ir first stunt show extravaganza at th~ Cow Palace. Two w~eks ago ISCE announced a tentative date of Oct. 9, 1971. How~v~r, this date has since been chosen as the opening day for th~ World Series and ISCE f~~ls the chances of the S~ries starting in the Bay area are far too high. Both the Oakland A's and the S~ Francisco Giants ar~ both leading contend~rs for th~ir respective bas~ball leagues. ISCE has confirmed the next available date at the Cow Palace, Dec. II th, also a Saturday. Two shows will still be scheduled, with afternoon and ev~ning performances.
