BOI N Mojave, Calif. 93501 By John O'Rourke An unlikely combination of a couple of dozen bankers, brokers and advertising men form the Montgomery Street Motorcycle Club, headquartered on San Francisco's Wall Street of the West. The dedica ted cyclists got the idea for their club at a bar, when they agreed that the public was being negatively influenced toward motorcycling by the Hell's Angels' unhappy image. Since all of the group used their bikes to -s;ommute between suburban homes and Montgomery Street, the unique name had a natural hirth. Lately, however, newcomers from other business sections of the city have been admitted, and a few attorneys - and even a former mayor of a suburban town - have managed to infiltrate the club's roster. Members hang onto ~heir rights with jealous tenacity, even after they move out of the Bay Area. A few have transferred the idea to other cities to which they have been called by their careers, but by' and large it is a slow move up the waiting list into the elite 24, particularly since some movers insist on paying their dues and holding their memberships. There seems to be no way of discouraging such a dog·in·the·manger attitude under the MSMC by-laws, which were taken practically verbatim from the Advertising Golf Association. Memben, who range in age from 25 to 45, must also qualify on the basis of the units they ride: 250cc or more although none ride heavy horses. Moto-Guzzis, BMW's, Bultacos, Hondas, Triumphs and BSA's, Greeves, AJS's and Yamahas are all represented. Club activities range from weekend trips to destinations like California's historic Mother Lode or wine country, to monthly luncheons, with occasional charitable projects. The most recent, a showing of Bruce Brown's "On Any Sunday", brought a $500 check for the San Francisco Police Athletic League. F or the businessmen wheelers, motorcycling may be an even greater sport than it is for other people: the change from th eir processed·air ventilated offices to the open road, and from desk chair to saddle, has the effect of a powerful tonic mu.ltiplied by a blending of good fellowship. - Sacfo Speedway By Bruce Young SACRAMENTO, CAL., Aug. 21, 1971 - The State Fair opened tonight and AI Lauer's Speedway racing program went on without any delay, The grandstands were packed while several top riders from Southern Calif. coming up to add their talen t to the program. The Voice of Speedway for SoCaI, Bruce Flanders, made his showing at Cal Expo and went away with some money after winning his Handicap heat race and finishing first in the Handicap Consolation race with great style. JoeFitzpatrick of Hennosa Beach, Cal.. made a very impressive show by winning his Handicap heat and Handicap Semi Final. Joe topped off his night by finishing second in the Scratch Consolation. Little Lester Chanky, still the crowd favorite at Cal Expo, finished second in the Scratch Main right behind Dave Gifford, who really did' some riding to stay ahead. John Dieu came back and won his Heat race and really had the gas on in the Handicap Div. II Main Event, to take the win. Joe Henry made a <:omeback to Speedway after an injury and showed his usual great style by winning his heat race and placing well in the other races that he en teredo As usual the Roony brothers made their mark. Pat won the Handicap Main while Mike came in third in the Scratch Main. Gus Lauer went down in a heat race and was pinned under his bike possibly breaking a bone. The match race between Dave Gifford and John Fishburn had Dave on top and in the second, Chanky really poured the gas on to lead all the way to the flag to nip Morley. (Results on page 28)
