, . In & Q. ;:: en ~ w 2 w ..J U > U Bill Silverthorn third. In the next, Silverthorn took early command with West, Bill Clements and Blackwell eventually moving up to give chase. Mark finally scurried to the point and went on to win, setting up a showdown for the final. West held the lead in this one but Blackwell moved up to challenge. On the back side of lap five, he got the lead only to be passed again two laps la ter. West then led for two more laps and again Mark took over with Gary J ories moving in to second and West dropping off to third. Five laps later, Jones moved into first but Blackwell got by again before the lap was completed - all this driving the fans crazy. Blackwell continued to hold off Jones' charges and the while flag appeared, giving Mark a great shot at a clean sweep of the Open class. Around the lake high-banked sweeper they came with Mark still leading by 20 yards over Jones when tragedy struck. A break on Mark's rear wheel seized the brakes and Blackwell came to a screeching halt, plummeting J ones to the lead and he went on to win amid cheers and applause from the crowd. Lars Larsson picked up the dejected and frustrated Blackwell a bit while later and drove him in the remainder of the course and the crowd gave Blackwell a standing ovation. That breakdown cost Mark a first overall and give him fourth. The Dirt Diggers North M.C. did all the flagging and lap scoring with Olympia Beer and Mike Goodwin doing the promotional end. The early mud delays caused the whole ,day to run behind schedule and this multiplied with the lack of ample amplification made for some diff, cult·to·overcome organization problems. Despite this, the' day was still exciting and fun. Olympia plans to go further in motorcycle race promotion and for the magnitude of this, their first real attempt, they should be able to see what things they'll have to improve upon for the next.
