The coune was tight with no fire roads. but lots of choppy dusty trails. At the drop of the banner the Amateurs and Experts took off heading for the smoke bomb four miles out over a lot of ·road crossings and across sandwashes. The first man to the bomb was Jeff Wright, No. 99x on his fast handling 125cc Rickman, makinl! it like ...J tJ >- tJ Good day for for sledding as Tom Cotes took top Open Amatuer on a Triumph. the devil was on his tail. Two hundred yards behind was Larry Pfutzenreuter, No. 238x on a 250 Bultaco, followed by Bill Bogner, No. 886 on a Husky and Jack Kneble, No. 888 also on a Husky. Wright held the lead all the way around the fU"St loop, got a twen ty-second gas check and pulled back on the coune just as Pfutz carne by. Pfutz still had to get gas so Jeff went out of the home check point with about a thirty second lead. The two leaders had it out pretty good on the second loop and carne into the pits wheel-to-wheeL In fact they carne by the Checkers pits and over the road crossing locked bar-to-bar and with their knees rubbing together but they broke loose and went out of the home check with Pfutz having the wheel on Wrigh t. But Jeff took the lead back in the tight stuff on the way to the bomb and the battle was still 00: By this time the leaders were well into lapping a lot of Novices that started thirty-seven minutes after the Amateur/Experts. Pfutz had the lead after the second gas check but Wright still had him in sigh t when his engine gave up. Pfutz carne in with a well-eamed first overall on his 250 Bultaco. Bill Bogner, No. 886 carne in second to claim fU"St Open class. Jack Kneble was third and Bill Saltzman, No. 602x was fourth. All were on Huski~. George Walker pulled in fifth on a fast Kawasaki. Charley Vandervoorde came in eighth. on his Husky for his first Expert ride, first 125 went to Ed Scott on a Rickman. He also claimed first Amateur. Rex Teneyck, No. 720 took first Open Amateur on his Husky, which makes it eight out of eleven for him. LeRoy Davis was the next Amateur in followed by Bob Raskel, also an Amateur. Tom Coles had a good ride on Overall winner Larry Pfutzenreuter cools off in the shade of his pals. his big Triumph finishing fourteenth Overall. The Dusters did a good job on the run and were even able to give us the top finishers in the Novice classes which Terry Clark got his picture in the paper again. was quite a job with the three loop race as some riders went three 100ps and some went two and it was hard to tell who the winners were after the first twenty-five. The first Novice in was Bill Lyman, No. 818x of the Desert Foxes M.C. on an Ossa and are they proud of him. Special 250 Novice was Tom Martin, No.. 522x on a Bultaco; first Open Novice went to Paul Titus on a Husky; second was Dale Newton on a Ducati. When first rider in the hot 100cc class was Rudy Abeie, No. 828 on a Harley-Davidson, second in was none; other than Rick Austin of the Cactus Casts. There was a good duel in the girls' class between Mary Brooks and Joy Matis, but Mary was able to get Joy in the last couple miles to take first girl and they both went the entire hundred and five miles. Pfutzenretuer was one hot and tired rider after the race and said, 'That was a rough ride. 1 got Wright going to the bomb on the third loop and thought 1 had it, but up he carne and repassed me. We really had a go at it." (Results on page 24) I
