If you judge any show by the amount of action which it produces and the amount of spectaton which it brings out, this one had it all! ./ The day's big deal went to the grand·slam rider with the bold "B FD" number plate, Husky·mounted Dave Nichols. He won three straight motos, and, for his troubles, he was judged the weekly winner of the California full-eoverage helmet - compliments of California Helmets in Van Nuys, Ca. While putting together a sensational display of gigantic leaps and ragged-edge whips around the very fringes of the berms, Nichols was able to scare the pants off most everyone! Nichols has competed in only five previous motocross events, he's certainly been missing his calling! Many of the back-ehute jumps which Nichols got away with, were, by measured distance, longer than most of the Senior·ranked riden have been able to pull out of the sack. And that's a fact. Another three moto winner was Oldtimer, Tom Hoyle, who, like Jack "The Giant Killer," was responsible for raising hob with the big stuff. While astride his small, 100cc Hodaka, Hoyle bumped-off a field which was saturated with h eavy-b ore equipment, during three different heats! Janice Kline, mounted on one of the small Steen's racers, powdered the Puffs by grabbing two seconds and a first p lace finish. Indian Dunes Park will have two full days of motocross racing this Labor Day weekeud, Sunday, the 5th, will be an .all-J unior day; )Vhile Monday will afford an all-.:ws program. And for those Junion electin(( to race both days, there will be four-foot trophies klr overall winners in each division. Displaying a sizzling pace for the checkered flag in the 250 IT Main Event, was Chris Smith of Alta Loma who ended weeks of frustration due to mechanical problems, and at the same time made his new sponsor, Kagay Cycles, a happy winner. Smith, riding his Montesa, earlier par-1ayed a win in his heat event, followed by wins in both the 250 IT and F.T. Trophy Dashes, and then capped it off with a team victory with . Jimmy Raymond in defeating Dean Meyers and Jerry Mulkey in the Buddy Race. I The 250 F.T. Main was described by fans as one of the best seen on any oval as Dan Corbett (Bul), Jim Barnes (Yam), and Smith turned it into a three·way battle for the lead, and then were joined by Rodney Panons (Bul), Nick Voge (Bul), and Roy Addington (Mon) to make it a real scramble in the final two laps for the checkered. All riders finished in this repective order. Two riders, Roy Widener (Kaw), and John Heemsbergen (Kaw), turned in what could be described as outstanding performances in any language. No...they were not winnen, but they certainly earned the attention of one of the finest crowds of the season as they' dueled with the likes of Bob Sanders (Kaw), and Corbett (Hon). Heernsbergen easily gave 100 'IT Main Event winner, Sanders, the competition he has been looking for, and then did likewise to push Corbett all the way in the 125 'IT Main. Widener, who appean to be getting better with each race, turned to every trick in the books to hold off the challenges of Steve Hein (Kaw) and Heemsbergen, while holdmg on to a second place finish behind winner Sanders in the 100 F.T. Main. 250 IT heat wins went to Rick Goade (Bul), Smith, and Corbett.
