WEEP 'FOR RECORD CROWD
to take this. one to make it a grand slam
for one of the biggest purses yet at the
fairgrounds track. On the line against
him were three of the hest, Scott
Autrey, Nutter and Bill Cody with all
riders getting a fantastic ovation from
the crowd as announcer Larry Huffman
introduced them.
As the gate went up, it was Sonny
Nutter with one of his jackrabbit starts
from the outside, coming out of the hole
like he was shot out of a cannon and
crossing over in to th e lead as Woods cu t
to the inside and grabbed the number
two slot.
It was Cody and Autrey behind
Woods and the fans knew that Rick was
pushing hard and kept tight on the
inside and 'finally was able to pull
abreast of Nutter. But Sonny just hung
in there and they were going around the
track side by side with Nutter having
just a little bit of an edge going into the
corner giving him the lead coming out.
Nutter's one problem was that Rick was
on the inside and Sonny couldn't pull
ahead enough to close the door. Rick
couldn't get the power coming out of
the corner by holding the inside. It
looked like a standoff until Sonny
drifted a little wide in the corner and
Rick pulled away as Bill Cody was right
behind him waiting his chance and cut
under Nutter on the last lap to take
second with Autrey finishing fourth.
The Woods' talent seems to run in the
family as the intermission race was with
the mini-speedway machines with Rick's
younger brother, Gene, taking the win
over Marty Miller and Bill Rucker with a
form that looked more like Rick
himself.
Looking like he should be moved up
to Division I pretty soon was Scott
Sivadge as he took the win in the
Division II Main Event as Phil Moon was
able to move his Velocette-powered
speedway rig up into second with John
Flanders looking good finishing third.
The wins in the Division fil races this
week went to Erwin Moon and Steve
Stricklin.
The team match race this week. pitted
Don Cullum and Ed Williams against
Dennis Gildehaus and Jim Gresham.
This one, had to be restarted as Don
Cullum came out of the corner in the
second lap and lost control and all but
centerpunched Jim Gresham as they
both went into the wall and upended
rather spectacularly with Don getting
his foot wedged in the machines, but he
was none the worse for wear and was
able to come back for the restart. On
the restart, it was Gildehaus and
Gresham finishing one·two to take the
win.
