(omp Group Grows in 11 Scrambles Blackwell Devastates Fremont By Bill Spencer FREMONT, CAL., Aug. 15, 1971 Husqvarna motocross ace Mark Blackwell tripped up to the North lands Uto ride some different courses" and thoroughly devastated the best the CMC North could offer at the newly cut Bob Grossi Motocross Track at Fremont Raceway. The young Mission Viejo speedster won all three motos and, except for a brief respite in the second, led the entire distance. Steve Corcoran took three seconds in three motos to garner that spot and DiI10n Cook beat out Daryl Hall for third. , Jon MiI1er, another Southern Californian, won the 250 Senior event, but it was a tighter race. Miller had to battle Bill DaPrato of Sacramento right down to the wire for the overall win. Both riders had four points going into the last moto and the outcome would be decided on who was to take the checkered first. Chris Carter could do no better th,an eighth in the first moto which wasn't all that bad considering that he was astride a new prototype Yamaha and it was the first time that he had been on it. He led the second moto for a few laps but when MiI1er pressed him, he just kept up his same pace and let the 'CZ rider go by. In the third, the A&A ace did the same b.y running very consistent laps and finishing third to take the third overall. For DaPrato and Miller, they diced for most of the last moto to keep the spectators happy and Miller pulled away at the end to take the overall. Not too surprising was the ride turned in by young Bill Grossi in the 125 Senior class. Bill rode the fastest race of the day and was a hit with the crowd. He won the second moto and with time, will be more consistent. He finished the day third behind Intermediate Jim Turner, the overall winner and Ron Hoffman, first Senior. Noffsinger CHICO, CAL., Aug. 21,1971 -Those two stroke riders, who in the past have had trouble keeping their mounts beneath them had no trouble this evening and were really flying around the one·sixth oval here at Cycleland Speedway. Ron Alves had his Ossa in top shape while running away with the feature event of the evening, the 250cc Handiap Main. Starting from his sizeable deficit he passed Dan Peterson (Due) on the second lap and was never headed. Ron's style and ability from all that practice at Cal Expo's speedway racing is really noticeable. Peterson hung on for second place. Joe Allen became a two time winner this evening when the Bultaco of Jim Crenshaw quit running on the last lap of the 250cc Scratch Main. Joe was right behind him at the time and simply coasted home. He had previously taken the Expert Main after a close battle with Ted Bare. John Steen kept his 100 Honda perking the evening long and took the 100 Handicap Main in a close one. Gary Barrett, Tom Southam and Dale Sandell were all battling in there at the final flag. Gennai picked up four big points in this battle and with Foley only having an edge of one from the previous evening at Fremont. John now has an edge of three points for the weekend. In the 15-lap Main Gennai took a small lead over Mike Renslow and Nick Nazzisi. Gennai and Renslow moved away from the pack quickly and were never challenged. Nazzisi and Pat McCaul battled for the distance and Petersen held Foley to sixth for some time. By the last lap Foley had closed the gap to less than a second but a pass was out of the question. The heavyweight action was also fast and furious as in the 15-lap 650 Main. Hughes led all but the last laps with Tiffen Mullenax holding down second until Bill Landsborough drove his BSA from a deep sixth spot to win out at the checkered. Landsborough picked off his riders, meticulously and set things up well enough so as to make it look like he only had to labor when he wanted to. With Bud Smith out of the running, Jimmie Brooks getting his bike into shape and Bill Budde sitting out a nasty 30 day suspension, Landsborough is looking good for the high point man in this class. By James Brammer VALLEJO, CAL., Aug. 20,1971-The only Amateur races running in the Bay area Friday night, the American Canyon M.C_'s TT scrambles were an all star attraction for the Expert class. Larry Drew led that class in the opening lap of a four-lap final, chased by Jim Foley, John Gennai, and Pat McCaul. Foley took the lead from Drew before Gennai's tum. After Gennai gained the lead, he broke away for a Sunday ride carrying newly acquired "A&A" letters on his leathers. lIe is on the A&A team now. (A&A Motors of Redwood City is a sponsor of champions, a prestigious symbol among riders.) Following Gennai at the finish were Foley, Drew, McCaul, and Rick Hocking. Hocking passed Foley in the so caIled sweeper tum on the last lap to win the 500cc Expert final. In the 650cc Expert final, Ken Helling proved the most competitive rider of the nigh t for Gennai. Helling led the early laps before giving up the lead to Gennai.
