i Foley Gains with Fremont Wins " '" ,,' ~ '" ~ w Z ~ ~ () By Bill Spencer FREMONT, CAL., Aug. 13, 1971 Friday the 13th may be unlucky to some people and it has even been known to keep people from going out of doors for fear of some bad omen getting them. Jim Foley had no fear for this day and gave up a try at the high point trophy over in Lodi to ride against arch-rival John Gennai. Gennai, on the other hand, might better have looked at the date as a bad sign, as in the heat race, he crashed trying to pass Rick HockIng and failed to transfer to the Main Event. The short five-lap Main went easily to Foley as he got another fine start. Hocking dogged him the whole way after Mike Renslow had his little seizure number and was right on Foley's rear wheel at the checkered. The 500 Main was also an easy runaway for the National Scrambles champ as he did his usual fast start and again led Hockin~ to the checkered. In the battle for heavyweight honors, the Main was a runaway for Gennai after Landsborough got off in the infield section. The minibike races drew as many youngsters as an August swimming meet for kids. The girl races carried famous names as Vestal, Wheeler, Dorrestyne indicating they were wives, daughters, or in the case of Dorrestyne, a sister-in-law, of people well known to the older generation. Cheryl Vestal finished in first place.' . Rick Hocking won the 250cc Expert final moving up from third in a very close race with Bill Trumbull. Supposedly, it is a joke against Bill Trumbull who walked away after being ran over in two separate spills last month. Trumbull frequently leads the 250cc Expert class in tl)e TT scrambles at Vallejo, but he can't keep out of striking distance of pursuers. Most recently, it was the officials who got Bj}l Trumbull. Legally, they get two or three winners a night when bolt on silencers fall off or come apart during the race. No silencers at the finish - no trophy - no points. Trumbull was leading more than halfway through the 250cc Expert final when he was black flagged. Asked after the race, why the disqualification? Trumbull said he didn't want to talk about it and then added; "You ought to see what those guys did to me in the heat. They got my chamber." He held up a battered exhaust pipe assembly that had come loose during the Expert final and pointed out fresh scarred marks.
