WEST COAST'S BIGGEST MOTOCROSS MEET? Olympia Beer is hosting one of the most spectacular motocross races ever staged at the Cal Expo Fairgrounds on Sunday, Sept. 5 - Labor Day weekend. The Sacramento Mile National has been cancel1ed and this race could wel1 take its place in importance. The California State Fair with over 952,000 attending is California's second largest fair with over 60,000 people attending the day of the race. That's exactly what motorcycle racing needs.' Coordination along with an established draw. The producers are spending over $12,000 in T.V., radio, and promotion in Northern Ca1ifornia in order to acquain t new. spectators with the sport. This could be the largest attend~d motorcycle race ever held. Olympia is guaranteeing a $3,000.00 cash purse and other prizes and con tingencies galore for riders and spectators alike. Trophies for amateurs are up to 4' high. "On Any Sunday" (Bruce Brown's super new film on bike racing, which opens at the Tower' August 18) is also making additional contributions. Cash like that is what brings the big boys; already signed are John DeSoto with his Dynamic Duo of Suzuki 400's; Tim Hart; Lars' Larsen, that hot American-European; "Feets" Minert; Tom Rapp (the fastest American at Indian Dunes); Jim West; Doug Grant and Bill Clements. Since his stay in the hospital was a lengthy one, his medical bills will be pretty extensive. The track is located between two elevated spectator areas for optimum viewing. Special preparations have been made to insure an enjoyable, professional1y run race: (I) Entry is limited to 400 riders by mail only (and is expected to fil1 quickly, so apply now); medical insurance and admission are included in your entry; $5 amateur per class (J uniors), or $10 professional per class (plus an official T-shirt free if you ride more than one class). (2) A system has been designed to run motos off only 30 seconds apart to eliminate boring delays and also keep riders from missing their motos. (3) An excel1ent P.A. system is being installed with an exciting announcer to keep your informed and maybe even get your rooting for your favorite; we'll even have pro rider introductions so you can pick a hero! (All they need now is OTB). The race will be run' with the professionalism never seen in motocross before by a crew from the Dirt Diggers North and directed by Walt Vaughn. This opportunity is just what national motocross needs; coordination with an established draw to acquaint new people with the excitement. They've provided a package here so that you can throw the whole family in the car on a long weekend and enjoy one of the best motocross races staged anywhere. Ne,adl Off Road EntlllSilsts 250 Miles in Two 125 Mile loops Start: In Las Vegas, at the foot of Tropicana Boulevard and the old Stardust Racetrack Motorcycle Classes: Due to the early start of the motorcycles (9:00 am), the Competition Committee has ruled that they will be limited to ten hours running time. This will eliminate the necessity of lights of any kind in the motorcycle class. In this respect, a new regulation was adopted and will be in effect requiring a red glass reflector, minimum .of two inches in diameter, mounted securely in a vertical position on the rear fender.
