Local Shoes Eye Ely Opener By Shirley Knop ELY, NEV., July 25, 1971 - Motocross came to Ely Sunday, courtesy.of the Alecranes Motorcycle Club. The Alecranes are a new club, and the sum total of their motocross experience before Sunday was that a few of their members had ridden a· couple of motocrosses in other areas. They were turned on however, so they decided to introduce the sport to Ely, and their enthusiasm more than made up for their lack of experience. The racing came off beautifully, and it's safe to say that Ely's first motocross will not be its last. The only disappointment was that many Ely riders decided to sit this one out, so they could see what they would be getting into. Making up for the smaller than expected turnout of local riders, however, was a strong Utah contingent, which put on a good show and took home a number of trophies. The star of the day was Utahan Frank Myers in the Open class. Frank completely outclassed his opposition by about half a lap per moto - loafmg. Ely rider Dave Gregerson was Frank's closest competitor. Some of the best racing of the day took place in the 250cc class where Randy Sundin of Utah finally beat out Ely's Ricky Carlgren for first place. The ElV riders held their own in the 200 doss. Jack Miller won the fIrSt two motos and then broke his throttle cable, surrendering first place to 3rd moto winner Alan Levie. The 125 class provided plenty of surprises. Utah Novice Mel Van Wagoner won the fIrSt mota and demolished his front wheel in the second, which was won by.Larry Knop. A borrowed front wheel allowed Mel to win the third moto, leaving second to Larry. Third went to Alecranes' member Mike Polish, just one point ahead of yours truly. Rounding out the day's action was a mini-bike class, racing on a mini-IT course. Dave Gillette and Ernie Linnel split the first two heats, and then Dave took the decider. (Results on page 28) ADR MOTOCROSS (Cont'd. from page 30; out and was passed by Koster and Spurlock. N ohlitt dropped it on the back straight injuring his leg enough to put him out of the moto. Lawrence passed Spurlock on lap three only to spin out and let Spurlock by. Try as he would, Spurlock couldn't catch Koster who led the 125 class across the finish line followed by Spurlock, Stem and Lawrence. A Special Merit award should be given to Gary Tussing who rode his Triumph 500 in all three motos of the Open class. The big four-stroker looked like a street bike without lights. Tussing dropped it twice in the first moto and fmished without brakes. First across the line was Joe Bernfeld (Mai), followed by Tom Shoenberger (Hus), John Armstrong (Yam) and Tussing. On the last lap of the second moto Armstrong was behind Shoenberger looking for passing room. Shoenberger spun out and Armstrong center-punched him bringing both riders down unhurt. Armstrong was up and running first (he' was on top) to finish second behind Bernfeld. Tussing passed Shoenberger and followed Armstrong at the flag. Shoenberger dropped out of the third moto leaving Bemfeld to take top Open honors. Armstrong looked like a sure second but spun out at the same place where he and Shoenberger tangled letting Tussing take runner-up in the third moto and third overall. ADR is closed for the month of August aI).d will begin the season September 19 with a freshly oiled and widened track. Powder Puff and 100 Novice classes will also ,be added. A Hare 'n Hound is tentatively scheduled for October 19. (Results on page 28) SMUGGLE bikes 1st 1st HAVE July 31 - August 1 Lancaster, California 125cc Class F. Karen Hartman, photographer and wife of one of the riders, competed on an equal basis in that class and came out with number 2 for the day. Karen, who says she is 21 and over, has raced in the Powder Puff class when the club has had them, always coming in fIrSt, plus taking first in the Women's Division in our Spring Enduro of 50 miles. She is eniployed as a medical technician but in her spare time truly enjoys her 125 Yamaha, declaring her cycle says uNo, no, no" when she starts to slow down for the comers. Th.e 125 Jr. class first place went to David Dixon from Wichita, riding a Yamaha. His total score for the day was 771 points, closely followed by Mrs. Hartman with 696. The last heat of this moto was exciting, for Dixon had held first place all the way except for the last few feet when Karen went around to snatch the flag.
