EUREKA! New MX Track! N M 1 .... . en N ,;, " < By Larry Knop EUREKA, UTAH, Aug. I, 1971 - No Virginia, those aren't big, brightly colored jackrabbits bounding through the sagebrush. Those are motocrossers at the first Firebirds M.C. motocross. Actually there are no sagebrush on the course. The Firebirds cut a good course through the sage just outside Eureka - nothing impossible, but relatively fast and very difficult to ride well. The waist-high sage around most of the course prevented course-cutting, and the sigh t of riden alternately bounding above the sage and then disappearing was definitely different. ~ w Z W ..J U > U To show that you're a MAN (Motorcyclist Against Noise), pick up one of these free LESS SOUND = MORE GROUND buttons at your local participating motorcycle dealership. A good turnout of riders, )DaIly of whom traveled over 100 miles to attend, ensured a good day of racing. The 100 class was handicapped the first two motos by the efforts of the three (count 'em!) water trucks. Some of the dusty comers turned to grease, a situation which may found upsetting. LaMar Walker (Hod) kept his head (and his traction) the best, to take the win over Bruce Steadman and Tom Bacca. In the battle against the closing of public lands to motorcyclists, our sport needs the help of every MAN in it. The 125 Expert class was just the opposite. Peter Crandall (Suz) really took a liking to the course and essentially had no competition. Bob Plumb (Mon) had only one objection to the course - he couldn't catch Pete. Bob had to settle for 2nd as a result. The 200 Experts had a good battle though. Dave Parker (Suz) had to work to fmally beat out Will Terry (Kaw). The 250 Experts had a surprise entry, Frank Myers. After a 100 mile drive Frank discovered his 400 had a broken frame, a condition which is not conducive to going fast. He put on a good show on a borrowed Ossa 250, but it wasn't quite as strong. Phil McDonald (Hus), a newcomer to the Expert class, had it an together and there was no holding him back.. Phil took all three motos, with Frank settling for second. The Open Experts really bad a ball on the Firebird's course, and no one enjoyed it more than Dennis Packard. Dennis recently switched to CZ, and it looks like he's used to his new bike now. At least he was untouchable today. Preston Gerber (Hus) was his closest competition. Eureka has been known primarily for its mines and its proximity to the Cherry Creek desert area. The Firebirds are definitely one of Utah's top desert racing clubs. After Sunday, however, it looks like Eureka and the Firebirds are also going to put their mark. on the motocross map in Utah.
