It Ossa mounted Mark Eggar got locked in a tight banle with two other Master trials riders, Kevin Walker and Bob Nichelsen. He managed to tie Walker at 25 while the pair edged out Nickelsen by one. seTA, P10 nkers , ry E ffrin By John Adcox ELFIN FOREST RANCH, CAL., July 25, 1971 - The Southern California Trials Association and the Plonkers Trials Club held a joint family trials at Elfin Forest Ranch. The ranch is located near Escondido and has all camping facilities. The area just outside the campgrounds offered a wide variety of terrain, a wooded area (a few trees), stream beds (some dry, the others too deep) and just plain dusty gullies. There were 12 sections, the Amateurs rode sections 1 through 8, Experts went 1 through 10 and the Masters rode them all. Everyone made four loops. The loop was fairly short and most spectators found it no trouble at all to tour the section on foot. The kids sections were in an area about half the size of a football field and they rode five sections - four times each. Most of the sections weren't difficult but they were tricky; lots of small bumps to knock you off your balance. Sections 1 through 3 were under the trees and within a few yards of each other so a lot of action was going on there when the trials got underway. Section 2 was the most fun; you entered it from a bank, dropped down into some thick underbrush and low branches which formed a tunnel; at the end, a sharp right brought you to the opposite bank and a quick blip of the throttle and you were out of the section. Section 5 was a gully. The entrance dropped off about 4 feet, then a quick right started you through a narrow, twisty gully and then another right up the bank and to the end of the section. Section 8 was set up under some trees and in a rocky ravine - not a bad section if you didn't give it too much throttle at the wrong time. Some did and found the rocks very uncomfortable. Sections 9 through .12 were laid out end-to-beginning. Where section 9 ended, section 10 started, and so on. If this wasn't bad enough the sections were straight up a ravine on the side of a mountain, so it was a continuous climb to the top - over 100 yards from the start of section 9 to the end of section 12 with rocks and 3- and 4-foot steps to jump. At the end of the trails, a barrel roll was set up, None did too well but all had lots of fun. Family trials give competitors a chance to ride trials a,,-d relax and have fun. After all, that's what it's all about. (Results on page 32) Desert Heat Aced By Kent Nicholls LAS VEGAS, EV., July 24, 1971 As the thermometer pushed 113 degrees in Las Vegas Saturday, 95 desert racers though t it would be neat to race near Caliente, a small cattle town in central Nevada. It just so happened that Rim Benders M.C. was having their First Annual Mid-8ummer Hare Scrambles in this area the next day. The terrain was similar to Cherry Creek, complete with dust and millions of tire-grabbing boonie bushes. Many riders must bave froze to death in the relatively cold gO degree weather as 37 finished and only 18 went the full 100 miles. Spectators were treated to two fantastic duels as Rex Frehner (Oss) and Tom Scales (Hus) diced for first Open Expert, and second overall. Tom came out on top, just barely. The other super race of the day was between 125 Expert's Bobby Davidson (Pen) and Casy Folks (DKW), These two riders dueled 10 feet apart for 100 miles! George Antill trucked on to win overall on his 250cc Yamaha_ There is a man here named Doug Wilders, who rides a Harley Baja 100, and seems to do faster as he gets older. He got a first in the 100 Expert class, and an fan tastic 12 th Overall. All in all, racers and spectators alike had a great time at this premiere event_ (Results on page 32) Craig Hunter lost only a dozen points while riding section 1-8, an effort good enough to take the 250 Amateur class.
