Junio'rs Swarm' Tri-Am Opener ~ w Z W ...J (.) > (.) By John Grout VALENCIA, CAL., July 24, 1971 With 520 riders at Indian Dunes to contest today's qualifying round of the Tri-Am motocross series it would have to be said that if this whole thing is not one whopper of a success it certainly can't be blamed on a lack of rider interest. So many were the entries - 97 in the 250 Novice class alone - that promoter Chuck Ferguson elected to run on the long Dunes combo course, an idea designed to allow as much room as possible between the screaming machines. Each class ran two 25-minute motos through two water crossings and by the end of the whole affair the top 50 riders from each weary group advanced to the final round at a new date and place yet to be announced. In the 250 Novice endurance runs Mark Hovater (CZ) of Canoga 'Park was the eventual winner over Oxnard's Paul Hendricks (CZ) and Jeff "The Wrecker" Wecker (CZ) of Saugus. The second leg was led all the way by Bishop rider Joel Kyne and Tom Claire from Van Nuys, both CZ-mounted. Hovater's victory probably the hardest-earned in the day's program, came in a race that saw a constant dice between the front runners. At one stage of the conflict Wecker had moved within a wheel-length of the leader only to encounter handling problems somewhere along the back side of the course. From that point on Hovater continued to extend his lead. In the first moto for the Open Novices Ron McClellan (CZ) held off constant attacks by Russ Mortensen (Mai) and CZ racer Mark Granger. The second round for the class carted off by Port Hueneme's Lorenzo Garley (CZ) who made a successful bid from third to firs t in the last lap. The day's overall victory in the Open Beginner division went to Suzuki-mounted Duane Holman, a San Bernardino rider who grabbed a frrst and second. Winner of the other heat was Dave Carrao (CZ). The 250 Beginners, a dusty romp which concerned 83 bikes, had split winners: Mike Escarcega and Mike Hogan, both on Maicos. Penton-mounted Allen Bart scored back-to-back victories to be top 125 Beginners. Mark Morrison and Larry Melton (Hon) won the 100 Novice class while Steve Davison (Ric) and Ray McCoy (H-D) did the same in the 100 Beginners. The two motos for the 125 were too close to name a wi'nner as of presstirne. Among the contingent riders, however, were Fred Joehunk, Joe Root, Ron Acevedo, Greg Robertson, Charles Mott, and Rick Salmon. This weekend will see the inilJation of a new program, running the 100-125s in the morning and the 250-0pen machines in th<: afternoon. ACE will host another All-Junior Motocross Saturday, the fmal one until further notice, and Sunday will see the fourth round of the Can-Am Series, featuring a $1000 purse. (Results on page 28) Large classes over the long course made Sunday's races at I ndian Dunes fast. CYCLE I'itgoes in the dirt, we've got it. (I, it goes on what goes in the dirt, we've got it too!)
