For seven days high-performance enthusiasts will have the opportunity to tune and compete for National Land Speed Records. The meet ends Saturday, Aug. 28, 1971 with final Record Run Attempts that morning. This event is sanctioned and conducted by the Southern California Timing Association, co-sanctioned by the AMA and for the first time this year by the NHRA. The Speed Trials compose of individual timed runs in established classes. If a competing car or bike breaks the existing record during a one-way qualification, he may then make a two-way record attempt the following morning, and if the average of these two runs exceeds the existing record, the contestant becomes the new record holder for the class in which he is competing. Since the beginning of Speed Week in 1949, J. Otto Crocker, one of the nation's foremost technicians in his field, has provided accurate timing of the event. His clocks measure speeds to one ten·thousandth mile per hour for the first quarter mile after entry has accelerated over a two mile approach. Clocks also record speeds for three additional miles should entries qualify at a speed above 175 mph and wish to run the longer distance of 5 miles. Entries range from the stock bodied Production, Gas Coupe and Sedan classes with speeds from 114-209 mph - on into Fuel, Modified, Roadster, Grand Touring sports cars and Hot Rod classes turning speeds between 125-256 mph - with the grand finale being the Streamliner, Lakester and Sports Racing classes setting Land Speed RecoTds at 140 to over 350 mph. ·In strong competition are the bikes ranging from stock frames totally streamlined machines with speeds from 38 to 265 mph. Entry fees are $35 or $50 for entry .now. Pit passes are $5 for seven days or $1 per day. If you are interested in competing at this year's event, it is not",. too late to write for Rule Books and entry forms. The one unique feature oJ the Speed Trials is that there are no cash awards for new records or class wins. Trophies and metal timing plaques and hopefully a great deal of recognition are the only awards for achievement. For the past 22 years, these meets have been conducted successfully as "run for fun" events and the majority of its participants like it this way. In an effort to further promote the image of Speed Week, the Bonneville Nationals, Inc. established a membership type program this year, with membership available to enthusiasts throughout the world. The new program has also opened the door to. high-performance companies, offering an entirely new avenue of exposure for their products and services. For information write Bonneville Nationals, Inc., 11927 E. Washington Blvd., Whittier, Calif., 90606. Poste,s, Rule Books and Official 1971 Programs may also be obtained by writing to the above address. BUCO GP . Skip Van Leeuwen will be the honorary starter for the Buco Grand Prix. The motorcycle grand prix, to be held at Orange County International Raceway, will be sponsored by Buco Helmets, of Encio, Calif. Returning to Orange County for the second straight race will be Dave Burchards on his Honda 500 Four. Dave won both the 500cc Production and Super Street class at the ABM Grand Prix, riding the new bike. The Los Angeles, Chapter of the American Federal of Motorcyclists is the sanctioning body for the race. Free Buco sun visors will be given ou t, while they last, at the gate. First main event will be at 12:30. Servicemen are admitted for $ 1 and Orange County students $2. Free parking is available to everyone.
