,... '" ~ w Z W ..J U >U IYI~I I ••• "America's No. 1 weekly motorcycle newspaper. You'll always see it FIRST in Cycle News'" LULL FOR LACKEY Like I said in the last letter I went to . Holland but didn't get to ride because the Italy club kept my AMA paper. Well, it's a long story, and this weekend is the Czech Championship so I don't get to ride any races, but next week is East Germany G.P. then there is a month break until the Finland G.P. but I'll probably ride some more International races. I'm going to ask if I can ride in the 500cc G.P. in East Germany. It should be sometime in that month's break. The 500cc guys aren't as bad as the 250's' so if I was to get a good start I would have more of a chance in the 500's because they are all the old men. Well anyway I'm beginning to get more aggressive, because I'm getting mad at all the hassels so then I go faster without worrying about crashing. I haven't been crashing or stopping or even slowing down - just going as fast as possible and you know my results. It's kind of strange, my two best places were where I had the most trouble, crashed once at Poland, and stopped twice at Yugoslovia, the other G.P.'s have been perfect and not so good in the end. I guess it depends on what happens to everyone else, too. I guess I'll need a new, good bike for the A.M.A. Series when I get back so if the CZ guys get a good motor, hide it away somewhere until I get back then I can use that motor in the series and have an extra one for a spare. WITHOUT RESERVATION I feel I must write you on the race held at Indian Dunes on July 5th. The idea of the race being a benefit for a fallen rider (Mr. Whitey Martino) was first class; I am sorry to say I cannot say the same for the turnout or the way the races were put together. All races were an hour late in starting. It was my understanding that it was co-h osted by the Viewfinders and Checkers. I can't believe any club had anything to do with the mass bumbling' of the day. There wasn't any rider's meeting; no one knew for sure what kind of start or much of anything. I read in your ad that 100% of the entry went to Mr. Martino. I heard that only $1 of it went to nim. Who is right? Also, having 10-year-old boys (give or take a few years) as flagmen is stupid. The course was good and it was a fun race. But, alas, I fear that Indian Dunes is only out for the wumpum. BOB SHAW Van Nuys, Calif. Don't believe everything you hear, Whitey Martino will receive 100% of the entry... Ed. All this can't lead to better things for motorcycle racing in the press. I don't think that you'd see Dick Mann, Mert Lawwill, Cal Rayborn, or Gary Nixon pulling any of these dumb stunts. Also, the new AMA flat-track at Corona Raceway is a vast improvement over Ascot. You can see all the way around the course, without havin~ to standup, and it's short sleeve weather each week, you don't have to dress as if you're going to the North Pole. Also, the food at the concession stand is fantastic, besides the usual hot dogs, they have com on the cob; burritos, taco
