..... N > :; ...., MOTORCYCLIST'S FACT SHEET ~ w Q. After December 1971, will 1 still be able to buy a bike with an _muffled exhaust? _ A. Yes-if you buy a motorcycle that was manufactured before December 1971. However, manufacturers are discouraging the use of expansion chambers and megaphones, and are obsoleting them from their coming models. Q. What benefit will 1, as a rider, receive from a quieter motorcycle? A. The primary benefit of less noise is fewer complaints. This, in. turn, will make more land available for riding. Q. What is MIC doing to counter proposed and existing legal restrictions? A. This "Less Sound More Ground" program is only the first in a series of plans designed to create a better image of the motorcycle rider. MIC is enlisting dealer support to lobby against restrictive motorcycle legislation in each state. = Q. A. Q. Why should 1 worry about noise if 1 want to ride in totally unpopulated areas? A. There is no place in the United States where you can be truly alone. The conservation cluDs in remote areas are those that have the greatest voice in restriction of the areas in which you can ride. Q. BASSANI MOVES. Tom Smisek IR.) gives ingenious neo·businessman Darryl How will this program gain public support? Publicity will make the non-.rider aware that motorcycle enthusiasts are concerned about their opinions. Voluntarily reducing the noise from motorcycles will encourage sympathetic support. Will the new muffling stardards affect the performance 'Of my new motorcycle? A. Manufacturers are designing their standard production motorcycles to put out the maximum amount of horsepower with the muffler on it. These muf. flers will be the result of a new, major research effort currently under way. Q. Will the muffler cause any mechanical problems or failures in my motorcycle? A. No-the motorcycle is designed to produce maximum reliability with the use of a stock muffler. The use of noisy open megs or expansion chambers may cause burned pistons, piston seizures or other related mechanical failures. Q. Can 1 modify the exhaust system on my new motorcycle after the new standard takes effect? Yes, but the warranty on your bike will be immediately voided. If you are Bassani a hearty clasp (note lack of more hip "fingers-up" grip) to offer congrats, in front of Darryl's- spanking new headquarters. Meanwhile, Jim Cooke, ace motocrosser and Bassani's plant manager, stands there evidently waiting for his turn. Bassani's ever-expanding line of pipes, kits and custom goodies moved to the 1117 Fountain Way. Anaheim, CA 92806, to provide more room for designing, testing, and manufacturing such items as the Quiet Pipe. There's also more advertising and promotion in the future. Keep 9" truck in' • Darryl. Fullerton to Build Park By Dick Ahlefeld FULLERTON, CAL., July 13, 1971 Anaheim's Banzai Minibike Park is such a success that it's being cop.ied much to the delight of everyone. On a 3-1 vote, the Fullerton City Council approved the inclusion of a minibike park within the city limits. Estimated opening date will be August 6, 1971. This is good news to the many minibke and motorcycle riders who COMPUTER RACER BELFAST, NORTHERN IRELAND, July 2, 1971 - A 500cc motorcycle r"cirrg engil)e developed at the Queen's University may form tbe basis of a new British mot01:cycle aimed at Ame~ican and other overseas makers. One unusual feature of the enterprise is that all the d.esign work on the engine was done by the University's computer. The engine was completed only nine months after the project was undertaken by a small team headed by Dr. Gordon Blair of the University's Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. According to Dr. Blair, the single cyhnder 2-stroke engine generates over 60 bhp at 7,800 rpm. This is the eighth motorcycle engine to be devel~ped by computer at the University. Two years ago a twin cylinder 250cc racing engine was designed .and built at Queen's. Dr. Blair said, "The engine is a serious proposition for road racing, 'scrambling' and as an ordinary road-going machine. The objective of the project is to try and produce greater target power. Using the computer, we are now completing design in a very short time whereas other methods might take years to produce our desired development goals. " • •I • • .. :. EVERYTHING BUT MUD FOR THE ENDURO RIDER SEND 25t FOR CDMPLETE CATALDG. , were banished last year from tlte vacant lots and range of hills that cut across the northern section of the city. The site is the Brea Dam basin, leased by the city from the Federal Governmen t, and offers 16 acres that can be developed into a cycle park. The initial investmen t will be $9900, and will be used for grading and fencing, signs, starter building, utilities 'and insurance. Recurring expenses will include $8,700 for two recreation leaders. Another $1,700 will be needed for rented portable toilets annually. The city will charge riders $I per day and estimates 50 riders each day during summer vacation.and 2.0 on all· other days. They expect to opera te on a $5300 deficit each year. Limits on the size of bikes, course rules, attire, conduct, muffler requirements and other controls will be set by Fulle.rton's Park and Recreation Commission. Fullerton's park director, James Cowie, expects the park to be an instant success, equal to the new park tney placed it on a trial basis to determine its success. Anaheim's minicycle park has come under scrutiny from many cities and most have commented favorably, realizing that Banzai Cycle Park may well be the answer to the question, "Where can 1 ride?"
