M Leach Doubles Cascade 'Cross By Larry Ulrich BEND, ORE., June 20, 1971 Eighty-one riders showed up at the Cascade M.C. motocross here. This may not sound like a lot of riders to some people, but 54 drove over a hundred miles to attend the race. The remaining riders were from the Central Oregon area. Thirty-one riders lined up for the 250 race and they took off in a cloud of dust for the first comer. Somebody fell off and a multiple crackup resulted. No one was hurt, but there were a few unhappy riders. The competition committee got their heads together before the fifteen minute mota was over and decided to split it up with the first Bob Leach. 15 fmishers riding Senior class and the remaining riders would make up a Junior class. This seemed to make most everybody happy and the Cascade has since widened the track and dumped 5000 gallons of oil on it to accommodate the increase in riders. The cross-country riding brothers Jeff and Jay Carrico of Christmas Valley finally tried their luck at motocross and Jeff took home first place 250 Junior but brother Jay had a DNF in the second 125 mota. The specla tors really got their money's worth today, as top-notch rider Bob Leach was on hand to do battle with young Randy Limbeck, and battle they did. Both riders rode two classes, Limbeck riding his own 250 Maico, and riding a 400 Maico for Central Oregon's new Maico dealer, J & R Canopy. Leach rides Husqvama for Adams' Motorcycle Sales in Salem. Of the six motos, Leach , won five with Limbeck winning the first Open moto. Mike Welch and Mike Claphan of Richland, Wash., riding Huskies in the Open class proved to Limbeck that they are fast by taking home second and fourth place trophies. After being beat by them at the Darago Park Team Race, Limbeck couldn't really accept it. Limbeck might be a hair faster than Welsh, but Welsh was more consisten t to take second. Limbeck, however, did take second among the 250s. The 125 race seemed to belong to Rickman-mounted Keith Nerseth as he walked away with the first heat. Next heat his Rickman developed carburetor trouble leaving Bend's own Scott Katter to an easy win. Young Scott is new in this "Senior" class, graduating from the beginner's class. He is really turning his Pen ton on. To watch him one doesn't think he is going too fast because he is so smooth. This is a rider to watch in the future. (Results on page 24) Hocking Holds CrenshalN in Cycleland Circuit By J. Noffsinger CHICO, CAL., July 3, 1971 - One hundred and eleven riders took part in a lengthy program at Cycleland Speedway. A~ the cream of the f1attrack riders in Sportsman competition in Northern California were on hand to do battle. Riders such as Joe Henry, Sacramento; Rick Hocking, Fremont; Jim Crenshaw, Davis; and Rollen Eskew, Rancho Cordova; and Mike Corcoran, Rio Linda were just a few of the top riders here tonight. The Expert Main appeared to show real promises as Joe Henry won his heat, Jim Crenshaw took his heat, and both appeared to be the class in the feature event. However, Dave Veffredo of Chico really put it to all of them as he hung in there taking the short route around the track, picking off riders with each lap, and taking the checkered first by some fifteen feet over Joe Allen. Jim Hubbard debuted a new 125 Suzuki Duster in the 200 class here and astonished the crowd by taking a second in his heat, in the Expert Main against 250s, a first in the 200 Scratch, and a second in the 200 Handicap Main. Jim Crenshaw enjoyed another fine evening by winning the 250 Scratch Main. In the 250cc Handicap Main, however, he could not get ahead of Rick Hocking. Rick started th e race some fifteen yards in front of Jim, got through traffic fust, and then held him off the rest of the race. Rick can really fly when there is no traffic ahead, but he does appear to have some difficulty passing those in front of him. (Results on page 24) - ....
