." .. If. ;::: 0> ~ > :; .... ~ w Lanzo Aces Unpiped Folly Z w -' By Bill Spencer LOm, CAL., July 2, 1971 - The feature for Lodi this week was, again, the 250 Expert run. Leading off through the big sweeper was Scrambles Champ Jim Foley with Gary Lozano in hot pursuit. Foley stretched his lead a bit in laps two and three but it was about that time that his Yamaha had problems. The bolt holding the exhaust pipe broke loose at the rear connection, causing the chamber to bounce off the ground on the right-handers. On the last lap, the chamber worked its way back out of the head itself and presto, no chamber and a distinct loss of power. Combine this with Lozano closing rapidly and the scourge of the Central Valley, Ray Huff and you have trouble. The three couldn't all fit through the last comer and it was Lozano that made the bid on the outside as Foley slowed. It was a close finish and the decision was for Lozano, Foley second and Huff third. Foley's return to racing after being injured has renewed his determination to try once again for the ~ o Bruce Aust appears to be very pleased with this slide. District No. 1 and if he manages to get it, he will most likely get the National title again. The illustrious Elmer Gantry of the motorcycle set led off the 650 Expert Main with another super start that kept Bud Smith and Tiffen Mullenax in check, at least for a lap. Gantry, normally known as Larry Lane, mild-mannered small appliance repairman, held the lead for two laps when Smith dove a Htde deeper into the tree turn and got around Lane's Triumph. Mullenax tried hard to do the same thing but bailed. This brought Jimmie Brooks in to the picture in third. Two laps later Brooks did the same thing to Lane to take over second spot and started in on Smith and then got him the same way. It was all a harrowing experience as these roaring 40-inch machines got from a flat·out third to a near dead stop in all of 200 feet. Brooks held on for the checkered with Smith, Lane and Roy Winters bringing up the rest of the trophies. Paul Leuty held it wide open in the 650 Junior Main to take a decided advantage over Rocky Kramer and Sonny Victor. Conrad Saxelby rode his last Novice race to another win making his streak extended to nine and giving the 650 Novice bunch a sigh of relief. He came off the Hne third but was away out in front past the second tum and wasn't seen by second place finisher Cliff Servetti until after the race. Foley returned to the winner's circle in the 500 Expert Main with an easy win over Honda ace, John Hall. Hall had his hands full of Ray Huff and Mike Van Lienden, but managed to keep his four stroke in front of the Zakarian Bandido and Selby Montesa for the duration. Again in the final Gennai passed Helling for first with Hocking finishing third. It appeared that Hocking would break Gennai's hottest winning streak ever for any rider in Vallejo TT Scrambles whe he was leading the 250cc Expert final. Gennai was cau¢tt in black plate traffic passing Jim Sailtone in the fllSt corner for fourth, then he had Bill Trumbull and Larry Drew to overtake before catching Hocking. Gennai passed swiftly moving Hocking with less than two laps to go. In nine Friday night meetings at Vallejo since April 30, Gennai has 10 first places to his credit. This is his fourth week to take double wins. Bruce Young led the early laps of the 200cc final with Mike Vestal in second followed by Mickey Lane. Lane moved up to first with a duel developing for second between Vestal and Young. When the checkered nag came down Young had slipped to third. Keith MacDeth on an Ossa ran away from other competitors in the 250cc Novice A final for firs t place while Ken t Johnson moved up to third place behind Rick Hocking came the closes to Geannai's performance in the wheelie contest and becomes the challenger for the tmal runoff to be made on July 9. Rooney SACRAMENTO, CAL., July 2, 1971 Dave Gifford of New Zealand, last year's captain of the Newcastle team in the British Isle racing season, was the winner of the Scratch Main in Friday night's races at Cal Expo. Gifford was followed across the finish line by Southern California's Ron Miller and local riders Carl Cranke and Dick Vargas. The Scratch Consolation saw last week's winner, Les Chanky, Lancaster, holding off a strong push by Stu Morley on the Expo track for the flrst time. Localites Rich Hardmeyer and Joe Henry came through for their best performances of the new season with the third and fourth places. In the Handicap division, Gifford and Chanky had to overcome a forty-yard handicap to battle it out for first place. Chanky was able to hold off Gifford and take the prize for' this division. Cranke, in only his second outing on the Speedway machine, was able to hold off the rest of the field and take the third spot. In the Division II Main Event John Green, Carmichael, Cal., was the victor when ten-yard handicap rider Pat Rooney fell on the third lap as he was attempting to overtake Green. In the Match Race pitting Les Chanky and Stu Morley, Chanky blew an engine on the last lap allowing Morley to come home the winner. However, Morley, in a grand display of sportsmanship, asked the officials if there could be a rerun. In the second time around on a borrowed machine Chanky was the victor. Next Friday night will see another round of the fastest racing action in the world at the Cal Expo Speedway. Races start at 8: 15 p.rn.
