Roberts took both 500 ~ Expert wins today on his Tracy's tuned w Husky, but not without a hard charge Z from Rich Thorwaldson on his Suzuki. ~ Also, Larry Pfutzenreuter turned in a ~ double win in the 250 Experts class on u his red Bultaco. . Roberts had a few words about the courses th'at seemed to sum up the feelings of most of the riders - at least the Experts. "This is really great territory. Both courses were riders courses: downhills, off camber trails, all kinds of wild stuff, not just a dusty sand trail like they have at Four Comers or Lucerne. I don't know why some of those clubs keep going out there especially for the short races; like the Europeans and Hare scrambles where you don't need as much area". The first Expert-Amateur race of the day was the 500cc class on the Chargers' side. Roberts had a big lead at the smoke, second man over the hill was Jack Knebel of the So. Cal. M.C., getting his ride in before he had to go to -5 wall. Then you said, thank God that's over, and rode down a sandy canyon work on the other side. Thorwaldson was running in tile next group of riders. After they passed the smoke you could see the riders going up and down the short hills for about a mile, really making it. The laps would take almost 15 minutes and the riders would make three laps in the forty-five minutes allotted for each race. trail. Larry Pfutzenrueter Roberts still had the lead on the second laps with Thorwaldson pushing hard in second, but Roberts got off hard on the third lap and Rich paosed him. Roberts was helped to get started again, and he came up to duel with Rich. Down the long trail into the pits riding full on., Roberts took it by only 100 feet over Rich. Bruce Dunford was third also on a Husky. Joe Krogstad took the first Amateur gold. AT 10 a.m. the 100cc Amateur.Experts were to go off on th e So. Cal. side. The front part of the hill had a three foot down hill steps for 50 feet then made a tight right tum down a sandy hill for 100 feet, then dropped off a four· foot I The 250 Novices had gone over the course first and had brought back the wild stories of wall-to-wall riders all over the hill and one of the few riders who made it dean was 15-year-old winner, Troy Hollis on a Suzuki. ow the 100 Am/Ex. attacked the hill and Terry Clark grabbed a early lead with Mitch Mayes on his tail both on Harley Davidsons, and that's the way they finished with Cordis Brooks third on his Hodaka. The lightweights 125-250 Am/Ex. went off on the So. Cal. course next. Jerome Ruzieka on an A.J.S. had the lead as they came over the Camel baks a mile out with Pfutzenreuter pushing hard on a Bultaco. On t he next lap at the down hill it was Larry in the lead then Darryl Ellis, just out of the service, then Cordis Brooks on a hot 125cc Carabella. Ruzuka was next followed by Jeff Wright on his 125cc Rickman trying to catch Brooks. On the third and final lap it was Larry with a good lead followed by Ellis and Ruzuka. Wright came in to take fourth in the 125cc class. Craig Lukins took fi.rst Amateur. Now it was starting to get a bit hotter and the 500 Am/Ex. would try their ...Ah, that desert scenery.
