Crenshaw Continues Copping Chico By John Noffsinger CHICO, CAL., June 26, 1971 - Positive thinking provided a successful evening here at Cycleland Speedway. With a Iigh t sprinkle of rain coming down, track officials called a halt after the fourth B heat had been run to see if it was going to continue to rain. With the entering of some 120 riders, many from the Sacramento, Calif., and Carson City, Nev., area those in attendance and riding did want to have their chance at seeing and racing this evening. A huddle was called, and out came the cars, vans, and what have you and began circling the track to dry it out. After some 15 minutes had passed the track was dry, and marvelously the rain Herr",ann Shocis . Cas"e Roci 11 By N. A. Williams CASTLE ROCK, WASH., June 26,1971 - Although the turnout at Mt. St. Helens' Professional IT at Castle Rock was smaller than expected, there were some good races tonight. Sonny Burres (Tri) got the lead in the Expert Main and moved out looking like a sure win. Suddenly up from the pack came Ed Herrmann (Tri) and took over the lead with just two laps to go. Chuck Joyner (Tri) was righ t behjnd Ed but couldn't hold it. Burres got back to second, keeping Joyner in third. Juni0!'S Randy Scott (Tri) and Tom Waterson (Yam) had running problems in their heat races but both were able to get their machines humming by the Main Event. Randy's trouble kept him out of the Trophy Dash. Neal Hulet (Tri) "ad gotten the lead in the first Junior heat and held it for two laps when Randy came around him for the lead but had to drop back as his cycle started giving him trouble. Neal took the win in the heat with Mike Hannula (Tri) righ t on his rear wheel. Scott came back good in the Main getting the lead early but couldn't shake Don Lipp (Yam) who was right behind him all the way. , Novice class wins wen t to Yamaha-mounted Steve Baker. The heat race and Trophy Dash was a snap for Steve but he had more competition in the Main. Steve got out first, in the Main, with Bill Lewis (Kaw) close behind. Bill held on to second place until the last couple of laps, when he went too wide on the comer and Fred Gustafson (Yam) and Ron Olson (Kaw) slipped under him. Then Jerry Whitlow (Bul) went around Lewis, leaving him in fifth place with Dave Ditter (Hon) righ t on him for sixth. The races continued, and everyone in attendance enjoyed a cool, hut exciting night of top flattrack facing. Joe Henry from Sacramento was here. .to do battle, as was Steve Pestoni, .Sacramen to. Joe and Steve are two of the best riders from the capitol city. They do impress, however, Jim Crenshaw, consisten t local rider (every Saturday night) put it to all of them again. Last Saturday evening Jim won all three major events here. However, this evening he only won the Expert Main, and the Scratch Main. In the Handicap Main he simply could not get through traffic fast enough to catch the leaders. However, in both the Expert Main and the Scratch Main he won going away. Jim so far this year is simply much too fast for all other riders who have come to Cycle/and Speedway to race at the "Track of Champions." John Arsen;ek continues to improve in the lOOcc class. He won the IOOcc Scratch Main breaking the five wins in a row record of Tom Southham this year. Tom had his troubles this evening and was constantly on the outside. Arseqjak took the lead on the first lap in the Handicap Main and was never headed as he proceeded to a very enjoyable evening. Jim Hubbard reigning National 200cc Flattrack champ, and Scott Vendley wen t to it in the 200cc class. Scott decidedly has the power edge with his Bultaco. However, Jim pushed his Yamaha faster into the comer and quicker out of them. It's just a matter of who gets in front of the other flI'St off the starting line. In the 200cc Scratch Main, Scott took the lead flI'St and held Jim off while in the 200cc Handicap Main Jim passed first through traffic and held Scott off down the straights. Both in this event had to be content to fmish behind local Stu Philips and his Bultaco. Stu starting on the zero yardage line maintained his lead through the course of the event. Perhaps next week will provide that warm, comfortable weather that Chico is usually noted for. (Results on page 28) CAPITOL SERIES CANCELLED The regular Friday night short tracks at Capitol Speedway have been canceled due to poor attendance by both riders and spectators. The series got off slowly this year with rain-outs and a track of dubious quality. The high-point trophies will be handled by the Bob Barkhimer promo ters. With the recent acquistion of Fremont track, professional short track racing should continue very shortly. ~ORstEN HALLMAN.~~. RACING INC. ·i~i" U.S. Dist. for Trelleborg.DIIotocross tires.
