Shaw Shines as Woods ~ Gets 70-Yard Handicap > By Mike Capalite :; Photo by Dennis Greene ..., COSTAMESA,CAL.,July2,1971-It ~ looked like Rick Woods was on his way w to a clean sweep tonight until the Z officials decided that he was making it ~ look a little too easy and voted to start ~ him on the 70-yard line in the main U event. With the start on the 70-yard line, Rick would need the breaks to win, but he didn't get them as the riders packed up in front of him and there was no way around. Larry Shaw, who had gotten a good start and dropped into third behind Fishburn and Moon, soon polished them off to take the lead and the win with Mike Bast righ t behind him and Butch Fishburn third and Woods fourth. In the Scratch Main Event, Woods again made it look easy on the greatl i improved track surface after taking the lead out of the frrst comer, but it was no runaway as Mike Bast stayed close enough to his rear wheel that Rick knew a mistake would cost him the win; Dut he went on to his sixth win of the evening, with Bast second, Shaw third and Scott Autrey fourth. Rick might have been happy over his wins, but there was no one happier that evening than 12-year-old Perry D'Armond from Los Alamitos. Perry was the lucky winner of the Yamaha mini-enduro given away by Milne Bros. In the division II Main, Rod Parsons kept his head for the whole race and fought off Jim Dorons constant challenges for the lead and came home on top with Jim in second and Scott Sivadge third. Mickey Quade, Steve Gresham, and Paul Henderson rounded out the rest of the finishers. Television star Billy Grey has returned to the racing scene and he has done it with a flourish as he came in as a reserve rider in the second division III Main :md took the win going away to emulate what Phil Moon did in the first division III Main. Woods Steals Scratch By Sportphoto BAKERSFIELD, CAL., June 30, 1971 - United States Champion, Rick Woods pulled off a wire-to-wire win tonight in the Scratch Main with a fantastic display of traction and how to put that horsepower on the track. The issue was never in doubt as he broke out of the gate frrst and once in the clear, proceeded to open up some emp ty trac k between himself and the rest of the field. The Topanga Flash, Sonny Nutter, was otherwise occupied fending off the many determined charges of 'Lightning Larry' Shaw, who was fighting off an inspired Mike KonJe. If the majority of the crowd hadn't been so intent on watching Woods extracting every last Iota of forward motion available, they would have seen a tremendous three-way duel a little way back. Don Cullum charged right out into the lead of the Scratch Consolation but, in a portent of things to come, his bike was slightly off note. Les Chankey needed two laps to get a claear lead on an ailing Steve Bast, then another to slip under Cullum in the last tum to take a lead he held to the checkered. Rod Parsons picked up the win in the Second Division Main in a wire to wire effort over Dick Cochran and Nick Nicholaides. Mike Lopez came from the 50-yard-line to grab the win over 16 other hopefuls in the bicycle race and took home a new helmet donated by Safetech. (Results on page 28) WE GOT BEAT AGAIN In the Baja 500 we beat all the bikes - except 1. We beat the 2505 and 360s and 4005. All sizes. Except 1. We did the same thing in the Elsinore Grand Prix big bike class, where there were 700 entries. Seems like we're always the bridesmaid and never the bride. But we don't want our 2nd place team, Gene Cannady and Max Switzer to feel too bad about losing to J. N. Roberts & Malcolm Smith on a 400cc Husky. In fact, we wonder what J. N. and Malcolm will do if DKW ever builds a bigger bike. Rick Woods. Warren Pulls Out Surprise 50-Lapper By Art Loya SOUTH GATE, CALIF., July 1,1971Tom Warren of North Hollywood was up to his old tricks Thursday night by scoring one of the season's biggest, most popular win. in the 50-lap 250 TT Main Event at Trojan Speedway. To hear prerace forecasters tell it, Warren, whose winning Bultaco was fmely tuned by Performance Products & Imports prior to the race, had as much chance of beating out top favorites Chris Smith of Ontario, and Dale Hopkins of EI Monte, as a Volkswagen had against a freight train. However, anybody who has watched Warren compete during the last two racing seasons really shouldn't have been sutprised of his victory over Smith (Mon), Hopkins (Bul), Bob Byars (Oss), and Paul Coberly (Bul). He was clearly the c1assiest of a top field of twelve starters although he appeared to be in trouble several times mid-way in the Main. Warren's key to the winner's circle was his keen talent for rail Cody Injured at Yen tu ra By Mike CapaIite I t appears that speedway fans are going to have to do without one of their favorite stars for awhile as Bill Cody will be sidelined with an injury received at Venutra last Monday night. Bill was matched up in a very close semi and all the riders were packed very tight for the first lap, with Bill on the outside when it looked as though his fron t wheel was going to wash out. He was apparently just going to lay it down when suddenly the front wheel hit a hole in the track and he high-sided, breaking his collar bone. A four to six week layoff is reported for the ace from Westminster, Calif. It is a tough break for Bill, who has just become the father of a baby boy born two weeks ago to his wife, Fran. In all, three riders held the lead at one time or another. Smith got the jump on the field as starter Bob Scheman dropped the green flag with Hopkins, Warren, Byars, Coberly, and Toby Stanford (Bul) in hot pursuit. On the third lap, Hopkins moved ahead of Smith and led for six laps before Smith regained the lead in a wheel-to·wheel battle. At this point, Byars had now moved to third over Warren as all four riders pulled away from the field to make it a four-way duel for the lead. Setting a faster pace than at frrst was anticipated, the leaders started to lap the field by the 13th. Bob Sanders, who has proved to be almost unbeatable in the 100 class aboard his Kawasaki, gave the fans a sterling performance after trailing in last place on his little but potent speedster, as he moved to fifth place by the 14th lap. Somehow, Sanders gave the appearanoe of a giant killer as he methodically eliminated his oppostion on the much bigger bikes. By the 23rd lap, Smith, Hopkin., Byars, and Warren, had lapped all but Sanders, but six laps later both Hopkins and Sanders were. involved in a tangle resulting in Sanders losing two laps while Hopkins just barely managed to save it and resume in fourth position. At the mid-way point the standings were Smith, Hopkins, Warren, Byars, Sanders, Dan Corbett, and Coberly. Steve Scott (Bul), who has encountered his share of bad luck this season at the Trojan oval, spilled on the 30th lap and was unable to continue action. Relentlessly pressuring Smith for the lead, Warren finally slipped under Smith for the lead on lap 35 and continued to stretch his lead all the way to the checkered that climaxed an excellent performance on a well-prepared track. Rounding out the top ten finishers were Tom Doty (Hon), Corbett (Bul), Stanford (Bul), Sanders (Kaw), and Bobby Baker (Oss). In earlier action, Smith easily outdistanced Nick Voge (Bul), and Stan Sweany (Bul), to win the 250 F.T. Main. Sanders' best performance of his three Main Event wins came in the 125 F. T. feature by out-speeding Bultaco-mounted Corbett, and Steve Young (Yam), as Sanders guided what has turned out as one of the hottest Yamahas at the fifth-mile oval and prepared by Yamaha of Fontana. Sanders other win. came in the 100 F.T. and 100 TT Mains, this time on Kawasaki mounts. The even ts here at the South Gate oval, have picked up with fast-paced action, larger fields, and intense competition. Together, with the return each week of new and veteran riders, Trojan appears to be enjoying a significant jolt of new vitality. Class A Speedway bikes compete every Saturday night on the newly-surfaced oval. (ReSUlts on page 28) M.O.R.E. Dealer Inquiry Invited (714) n6-4954 loeiers Sales & Sen;ee 6624 At'••tic, •• II,e•.
