o ~ :; .., ~ w Z W ...J OJ >OJ Foley, Gennai Spillw ay Foes By Bill Spencer HAYWARD, CAL., June 19,1971 - A diminutive but agile Steve Hernandez aced a heavy field of 650 Experts for the win at the Hayward Spillway, in front of veteran Tiffen Mullenax and recent convertee Fred Cziska. Young Hernandez has just recently acquired a ride in the 4O-inch class and has progressed quite rapidly to where he is very much in charge. The start of the fifteen lapper was immediately halted in the first comer when a multi-collision occurred with Mike Sarandria, Rick Otto and Tiffen Mullenax. Being the feature event of the night, time was given for all to get their motors in shape. Otto was injured with a leg wound and some pulled muscles and will be on the bench for some weeks. Sarandria heaned for the pits for some bending instruments while Tiffen managed to regather everything at the spot. Sarandria had a fall in the heat that bent some iron and it was a wonder that he got it all straight for the main restart. As the flag flew once more, Dan Hughes took over the lead, looking for a repeat of last night's performance at , Lodi. He led for half the distance with Cziska and Mullenax close in tow. Hernandez had suffered clutch slippage off the line and had to work from fifth. Just past the half-way mark, he slipped under Fast .Fred Cziska and appeared content to take the third until Hughes slipped out. His dice with Mullenax was short-lived as tonigh t was Tiffen's first ride at Hayward this season. His performance was exemplary even Pat McCaul holds a tight line under Nick Nazzisis. though he got beat. Rounding out the 250 class was another win for Ossa. In the Novice division, Chu.ck Frazier beat out Jeff Simoneah and Frank Nye giving Ossa three in a row. In the combined 100-125 Jr/Ex. Main, Steve Langston led i.t off and held an even advan tage over Dan Jensen until the last corner when Danny pulled out all the stops and got underneath Lagnston for the win. The stands nearly came apart as these young men really put on quite a show. In the 125 Novice Main, Dean Yoshizumi led off with Mark Lemlar close in. Lemlar took over on lap three with Bob Hammon passing under Dean on the next go-round to finish in that order. All three are soon to be Juniors. One exception was Harvey Crews, whose bike wasn't running well enough to race again. Ray Beck made a clean sweep of all the 250cc Expert events, but was hard pressed during the flat track by Gary Thompson. Once again Maico mounted Marion Matlock really got it on to take the 250cc Open Amateur Main but lost out in the trophy dash to David Cherry. Although Matlock can really take the corners, Cherry's Triumph have prover' faster in all of the last three races when it comes to the trophy dashes. The 650cc Open Expert found Phil Ray capturing the lead off the line and holding it till the second switch·back. There he was overtaken by Bob Bellino who hung on for the next two laps until Gerald Bergquist ducked in under him as Bellino wen t high in the third lap. But Bellino kept the pressure on to make it. a tight race right down to the flag. There were 21 spills recorded during the day, the most serious was Joey Cheeks who suffered a broken leg during the third lap of the 250-400cc Novice Main. Paul Alleson, who also went down during this event and was run over by another bike, was uninjured and able to race the rest of the afternoon. Bill Whitlow was taken to the hospital after a spill during heats but was back in the stands before the day was over. (Results on page 24) $3000 SET 1-----------.
