M~rinacci Nip. Ca.tl. Rock n By N. A. Williams CASTLE ROCK, WASH.,June 12, 1971 - It rained a little as time for the race came around. The track looked good and the rain that came down didn't hun it. Eigh ty-four riders signed in to see what they could do on the big track_ There was no time trials so the winners of the three fastest heat races made up the Tropby Dashes. The Expert Main Event was a race to behold. With two national numbers ridding this one, along with some of the best in the northwest, it was one of the dosest races I've seen. Triumph-mounted' Jimmie Smith took the lead at the stan with Pat Marinacci moving out right behind him. The rest of the pack was bunched up with ftnt one, then another trying to get out after the leaders. Ed Herrmann (Tri.) moved out to take third place and the battle was on for the lead. Marinacci and Herrmann both passed Smith in the last comer and Herrmann put on a terrific last minute drive for the line but Marinacci collected the win with Herrmann second and Smith third. Back in the pack Glen Adams had worked his Nonon up from the back to end up in fourth place. The J uninr Main was another close finish with Tony Perella getting his Nonon out first and Don Lipp (Yam) moving out after him. It was a nip-and-tuck battle all the way between these two. Don tried to pass Tony several times but Tony turned it on a little harder and held the lead. In the Novice Main Jim Pomeroy (Bul) and Jim Einarsson (H-D) took the lead and switched back and fourth throughout the main. Bill Lewis (Kaw) held third place throughout the event. This was Lewis' third class C race and he did a fine job. Einarsson had the lead and the win at the end of the race with Pomeroy second and Lewis still in third. The Fremont facility will run again in July. Leading off the 20-lap affair was black plate No. 17, Bill Landsborough aboard his trusty BSA. In the heat, it was Bill Flett and Ruqy Jacobs doing all the battling until the last lap when Landsborough took over, but in the main, the Campbell M.C. flash wanted nothinjt to do with the rest (teflr Sky Over I(flinier By Rick Yarber RAINIER, WASH., June 12, 1971 - As' fate would have it, the afternoon rains subsided and the evening was smiled upon by the Great Cycle God over the little town of Rainier. The track was in good shape for the evenings; frolicking. Despite the afternoon showers, the faithful old pumper was brought out and the track was given a drink to settle it down a bit. Dean Chamberlain, Line Referee, gave the boys the usual pre-race pep talk and the events began at 7 ;30 prompL Entries totaled 116 riders. After heat races, winners participated in th e Trophy Dashes. Micky Dunlap (Mirelli) took the honors in the Mini-Bike class followed by Chuck Anderson (Kaw) in the 100cc class; Rodger Davis 125cc class; Chuck Anderson 200cc class; Ron Graham 250cc class; and Jim Grave in the Open class. During intermission some of the riders competed in a wheel walk contesL Each rider was given three tries to make his mark in the dirt. It looked as though Chuck Anderson had it sewed up when Rick J ones bettered Chuck's mark on his third attempL Micky Dunlap won the wheel walk contest in the mini bike class. Ballenger Stops Crenshaw Streak By John Noffsinger CHICO, CAL., June 19, 1971 - Bob Ballenger of Chico riding a yellow Yamaha led the Handicap Main from beginning to end to stop Jim Crenshaw and his Bultaco from winning his 12th Handicap Main Event here at Cycleland Speedway. Jim again on June 26th still attempt to secure that hand made trophy only secured by five other riders in the history of Cycleland Speedway. The track during the course of the evening proved rather slick, and many riders hit the dirt, taking those behind them with them. In one heat in the 200 class seven out of the nine riders in the event at one lime hit the dirt, some on several occasions. Also, in one heat in the 250 class there was a collision with such force, that Joe Allen did several endos and Cell against the fence putting him out for a time. His bike at one time was as high as the fence, and appeared to have a chance of going over. There were people and autos on the other side at the lime. Those people can thank that high cyclone fence that is on top oC the double plank fence for preventing the bike from crashing over and on to them. It should be noted that several Bultaco fiberglass fenders have been tom off during coUlsions here at CycIeland Speedway. It's quite costly and time consuming to replace them, and it definitely appears any person riding a Bultaco PurSang should watch his rear end here at Cycleland Speedway. John Arseniak took over in the absence of Tom outham to win the 100 Scratch Main Event. Bultaco has of the pack and so tie dove in low in the first comer and came out first. Wild Bill Flett rode in for the second place trophy while Steve Hernandez was forced wide at the onset and missed a trophy with third place in the bag_ In the 250 Expert bash, Steve Foster rode a smooth race to win easily over Nick Nazzisi and Rick Hocking. Nazzisi rode well with Hocking riding very close in comers minus a rear brake that he lost in a shunt at the stan. Hocking was very unhappy about this and when the trophies were handed out, he was stomping around the pits. now won the Scratch Main Event here by Cycleland Speedway six weeks in a row. John also pushed to an early lead in the 100 Handicap Final, and them simply cruished to the checker flag. Crenshaw had a terrific battle with local Lowell Moura! in the 250 Scratch Final having to come from behind to take the checker fIrSt. Lowell jumped to a good lead, however, Jim worked his way through several riders, and then passed Lowell on the inside in the north corner, and was never headed thereafter. In the 200 class Jeff Damon put on a good display of speed in the Scratch final and won by some 25 yards. He simply was not pressed at any time, and this year's reigning 200cc National Champion Sportsman Flattrack rider, Jim Hubbard, had to be content with finishing back in the pack. He and Ted Bare really had a battle with Ted passing on the inside in the south comer and forcing Jim ouL Then two laps later, Jim passed on the inside in the south comer with a slight collision between the two which dumped Bare immediately upon his "you know what". The starch was noticeably missing from Bare later when I saw him in the stands. Ah, the friendly rivalry of competitors here at the Track of Champions. (Results on page 28) Fast times of the evening were taken during the heat races. Kyle Davis clocked in the faslest time of 1.24.04 in the mini bike class (small-wheel) followed by Mike Thompson 1.24.00 in the mini big wheel class; Anderson 1.16.00 100cc class; Ben Thompson 1.16.04 125cc class; Anderson 1.13 200cc class; Graham 250cc class; Tom Hartman 1.13.07 Open class. (Results on page 24) Fol.olft'o . . . . .onl FOLSOM, CAL.,June 19, 1971 -Steve estoni was the only repeat first place winner in the second series of motorcycle races in the Dan Russel Rodeo Arena in Folsom City Parks. Pestoni had to work his way past an imposing number of Expert riders to sew up the trophy for the second week. Joe Henry never let up the pressure and made Pestoni work all of the way for his Win. Paul Minor Jr., and Mike Corcoran both made their moves on the last lap and came through to gamer third and fourth. Once again the use of silencers was strictly enforced and with the use of decibel meter riders were made to quiet their engines. The name Conrad Saxelby arose again in the 500-650 Novice Main and again it was the winner. This makes for a perfect weekend as he won Lodi, Hayward and Alviso. A good job and quite an achievement. Monty Tavares' 360 Yamaha brought in the second place SpOL Phil DeCann brought in the win on his 350 Honda in front of Dave Butts, aboard a Bandido. Butts is a new rider and today was a good one for him as he was a double trophy winner with a second in the 1 75 Novice class. Randy Searl continued his domination of the 250 Jr. class with yet another win here, this time over Scott Williams. Williams just recently made the transfer to th e Junior ran ks and is already making his play for the front role in that class. Mike Kenyon made a come from behind bid to finish third in that race. Interestingly enough, just as he took the checkered, he ran out of gas. A close thing to work on. Williams' brother-in-law Jeff Hlebo will be making the jump to Junior soon as he won the 250 Novice Main over Frank Nye and John Martinez. Young Hlebo is one of those up-and-coming riders to watch. He has a very determined style and is quick. Jerry Kole bested the field of 125-200 Jr. as he has just recently made the Junior ranks. Cousin Ron Kole tied for first to keep the family name in front. Bob Marenghi got tired of the second spot fmish from Friday night's short track and thusly made it a win over Steve Moulton for today's effort. Bob Hammon continued on his winning ways with a good lead over Daryl Musto in the 125 Novice Main. Musto is a motocross convertee that takes to flat-track stuff very well, something like a duck to water. Scott Pearson was a very excited young winner in the 100 Novice Main. It was his fust and he deserved every inch of the large trophies given out that day. Gary Childress brought home the second spot. (Results on page 28) • .aJa Wins again!
