CRAM WINS BOTH ASCOT M.X·'S I Holcomb, this time on a Maico, had to move up through the pack to challenge Hockie's lead, unsuccessfully. In the second round, it was Jeff Wright again, only to be passed by Danny and Bryar in their battle for the lead, this time Holcomb winning it. Going into the last round with Hockie and Holcomb tied for first, Dave Pessey took the lead, followed by Hockie and Wright. Holcomb was running fifth b,u charging hard, Pessey was shoved back to thjrd with Holcomb still trying to find' some .room. On the last lap, Bryar finally broke loose and passed Pessey, then Wright, took secure an overall second. Hockie took the big . win while Wright swiped the thn-d spot. John DeSoto, making his debut on his new Suzuki ride, won the first 500 Expert moto, while Mike Cram and you guessed it - Bryar Holcomb dueled for second. Leading the second mota, John's rear brake locked up, forcing him out. Cram took the win, again followed by Bryar. In the final moto, it was Cram, Pessey, and Holcomb. Bryar had to ass Pessey before challenging Cram, but time ran out. In the final results it was Cram for Maico, with Bryar Holcomb taking second place in his third Expert race of the evening. Pessey took third. After the race, Cram said, "American Motocross of Fullerton really had my bike running great." Most of the top Experts showed up at the Inglewood Firemens Benefit race, and there was a lot of passing going on, and some of the favorites were left out in the cold The competition was pretty hot in the 125 Expert class as Jeff Wright on his Rickman had to figh t off a very hard charge from his old friend Bryar Holcomb on an E.C. Birt tuned Penton. Wrigh t won all three motos. Mike Garrett was able to take second on his Penton as Holcomb went down, in the second mota in close dicing with Wright and lost too much ground and ended up third. The 250 Expert go was also a wild affair with some new young bloods showing their stuff. Tim Hart, Maico mounted, grabbed the lead in the first mota and held it all the way for the win. Danny Hackie took second on a Ossa. It was not going to be a good day for the fast and smooth Hart as he had trouble early in the second mota and it turned out to be a duel between Hackie and a new star on the scene, Phil Jacobson on a C.Z. Hockie took the checkers over Jacobson. It was still anyone's race as they lined up for the third moto. SLxteen-year-old Wrigh t came out of the pack in the lead on his new red Rickman and took command of the race. Meanwhile, Hockie who didn't get a good start, was fighting his way up from third spot slong with !",olcomb and hit the deck on the number two tight tum in a battle of bandlebars with another rider. Wright built up a good lead and won the moto. Jacobson was second which earned him enough points to take the 250 Expert class win. Tough luck Hackie was' second and Wrigh t was third. The 500 Expert go turned out to be a very good battle between John DeSoto on a new Suzuki and Mike Cram on a Maico tuned out of American Moto Cross of Fullerton. Cram took the lead in the first moto but DeSoto passed him going over the lake jumps in the infield. But, Cram stayed close. Then DeSoto slid out in the back side of the track and Cram again took over the lead and came in for the win with DeSoto moving back up into second spot. Cram again won the second mota before battling DeSoto again in the last in which Cram again took the early lead. DeSoto passed him, then Cram passed DeSoto, who eventually was forced into the pits. A very fast and sliding J irn Fishback came up to do battle on his C.Z. but Cram took the moto and the 500 event Hard luck DeSoto ended up second, and Fishback was third. The firemen handed out all the troph ies to th e Novices and Intermediate winners as well as the cash to the Experts right after the race. We hope the firemen will have a race again ne.xt year. .
