At least that's what the Experts go - a hot. dry, dusty race. The water truck broke down between the ovice and Expert parts of the program. During the morning, when the Novices were racing, the water truck went wild, producing an ever-moving mudhole. Each moto, the first lap had to be spent finding out where the mudh ole was and wbere the course was dry. The mud and the large classes caused problems for the scorers, but most observers agreed that the Novices produced a better show than the rather small Expert classes. The real highlight of the day however, was the passnger race. Each bike had to carry either a Novice and an Expert or two Novices, and the passenger had to drive at least one lap. Preston Gerber and Pbil McDonald took the lead early and held it to win the big bike class, while Robert and Jack Plumb worked their way up to second overall to take the small bike class. The process of riders switching places produced a lot of laughs. When Novice Dave Burnett took over from Expert Tom Bacca, he got a little too eager and wheelied Tom off the back. Tom came down running and leaped for the bike just as Dave slowed down. For awhile they were Ist in the piggy-back race. Another unidentified rider came off the back of his bike at the jump just before the ." MEX., June 6, 1971 Sunshine and clear skies greeted racers and spectators alike at Coyote Raceway. Spectator turnout wasn't up to par compared to May's race, yet the racers came out in fine force, as three states were represented, Texas, Colorado and the Home State boys, which included the New Mexico Motocross Team. Tbese fine racers put on an exciting afternoon of racing with the throttles dialed on to the limit. The show got underway at noon and the track was in excellent condition for the start of the first race. The 100 Expert race saw hot shoe Don Vermon (Ric) from Amarillo, Texas, get out in front every heat and stay tftere, with two Albuquerque, N. Mex. boys, Bruce Coston (Hod) and Bruce Grousett (Hod) right behind bim and it ended that way in the final tally. Mark Harrington (Suz), 16-year-old from Amarillo, rode the 125 Ex. and the 250 Ex. and proved in both that those hot new Suzukis really do move out, as he would jump out in the lead in each moto of the 125 class and stay there till the end Jimmy Southern (Bul) and Chuck Stutz (Bul), both of the N.M.M.e. Team came in second and third. In tbe 250 class Harrington coIJected a 2nd place as he had two fine firsts but a DNF which let Dick Baber (Yam) take the overall win with a second, first and a fourth. Stutz (Hus) and Garry Lofton (Yam) of Colorado fought it out for the 3rd spot with Chuck coming out on top. The Open Expert class was a run away for Gene Duran (Hus) "The Flying New Mixican", as he got the checkered first in all three motos. Terry Peterson (Suz) from Pampa, Texas, gave Duran a littLe trouble in the first two motos as he held the lead for a couple of laps. But the hard charging Duram would fly by never to be seen by the number two man the rest of the race. Leroy Carmody (Suz) rode consistently for the 2nd place money with Larry Bare (Mai) and Peterson (Suz) livetting up the show , Mike Basi Winsl One Utah rider is about to bite the dust. firush and ended up chasing his partner and bike across the line. In the Expert classes, Denrus Packard was the most impressive rider as he rode both the 250 and Open classes, back to back. CMC usually schedules its races so guys riding two classes get a break, but Dennis didn't tell them. He did well, too, taking frrst in the Open class over Don FuIJer, and second to Steve Burgess in the 250 class. Steve, incidentaIJy, won bis $3 entry fee back for winning on a silenced bike. Congratulations, Steve. All in all, it was a good day of racing and the last at the Bacchus track until August 14-15. CMA will next bost a motocross July 10 in Nephi, Utah, as part of the Ute Stampede celebrations there. (Results on page 28) with a tie for 3rd. Bare had a spectacular crash in the first heat when he got out of shape coming over the down hill jump at full throttle. He was shaken, but not hurt and went on to ride the next two heats in fine style to make a good come back. Novice classes provided thrills and cbills for everyone as Earl Ditmore (Yam) got to the finish line to become the winner in the 0-200 Novice class. Jim Spencer (CZ) came in 2nd with Kim Lofton (Yam) close behind. The 20I-Dpen Novice found Roger Webb (Yam) leading the pack' as be finished first in the final lap. A fellow Santa Fean, Ron Nix (Yam), tore up the track for a 2nd place. witb Dave Clause coming in under the flag for a 3rd spot. The others followed in one by one to finish the day. Tbe mini-bike races gave the crowd a new feeling during the afternoon as little Sbawn Spencer (Yam) came roaring in for a triumphant first place with Leroy Sanchez of Albuquerque following in his slip-stream for a 2nd spot. Coyote Raceway in Taos has facilities for the comfort of spectators as well as a snackbar and excellent viewpoints of the entire track. PlEiN/TON MotocroSi, PI~cervllle, e~hf. lune6,1971 125cc Nov.
