i Mason Bags Two At ,Perris ~ By Elaine Jones PERRIS, CAL., June 12, 1971 - Doug > Mason had everything working for him ~ Saturday night and came up with Ii' double gold. The first win came in the ~ Mixed Moto where Doug outran Larry ~ Kosch. Mike Tidwell the youngest rider w on the smallest bike, a 90cc Yami pulled the third spot. There should be a class >- for kids five feet and under as there are U sure a lot of young riders making the scene at Perris this year. Tom White is still looking for Doug's groove and it looked like he had found it for a while in the 250cc Amateur-Expert go. Tom and Doug were making like Siamese twins in the first moto with the lead swapping courts like a ball at a tennis match. Doug finally got tired 0'£ it and pulled away to take the win. The next two motos saw Doug all by himself. Jeff Sexton had bad luck in the 250cc class but he flat blew them into the weeds in the Amateur·Expert moto. Jeff also set a lap record of 38.5 which is really motating. Jeff was so fast he could have stopped for a coke and still have time to get across the line before everyone else. Bob Greenstreet could get him off the line but that was about it. Bruce Prior was third. B.J. Hayden who has been plagued with mechanical problems most of the season, won for the second week in a row in the 125cc Novice II class. It was an exercise in sheer perserverance. Rex Hailey and N orman Blake were second and third. Rex held his own in the.100cc Novice II class, but it was squeaky close with John Shipley applying pressure every lap. Rex should be getting pretty close to the Perris Amateur rating. Tim Holm, a new face, who is starting to make waves took the 125cc Novice I class over Kazuo Sahauchi and Jim Ashley. He likes to win at the last :6 d NOISE: The sound thatkills the sight. minute and that's what he did to Kazuo every time. Wednesday night racing starts June 23. Silencers or mufflers are required. Young SACRAMENTO, CAL., June 18, 1971 - Dave Gifford from New Zealand aboard a super fast speedway machine showed several top Southern Calif. riders and Northern Calif. riders and spectators what speedway racing is all about. He put on a very impressive show by blasting around riders on the ouside inside and sometimes in-between to wU; the Scratch Main Event in this tbe first in series of 20 Speedway events to be held at Cal Expo, promoted by Al Lauer of Auburn, Calif. Approximately 1500 spectators were on hand to witness this first event and went away very impressed by the South'ern Calif. riders who traveled up to Sacramento to challenge the' North. Every race was a real thrill to watch from the start line to the very end. . Sometimes it seems as the racing has Just started when the checkered flag is dropped. The action happens so fast that one has a little tendency to feel that the night should go on forever. The two top local riders who did well during the night was Phil Stotts who won the Div. II Main Event and whole lot of ice cream given by Ferrell's ice cream emporium in Sacramento, along with a very nice trophy. This race was Phil's first attempt at Speedway racing and he shows great promise. In the Div. II Consolation event another local rider Mike Rooney, won. ' Most of the other event were dominated by Southern Calif. riders with a couple of our own boys doing good at the end. Milt Iverson, a old time Speedway racer, and Gus Lauer, son of the promoter, did very well in their respective races. Sumner McKnight won two events and really knows how to put a Speedway machine through its paces.
