Williams BRUSH PRAIRIE, WASH., June 20, ~ 1971 -It was cloudy on the morning of w the Miss Wasliington Annual Scrambles 13 and a large turnout of riders and j; ~ sp~c::'inwgla;,exs,e;;'~d~ere only 150 riders, some 25 or 30 of these being mini·bikes, to try for the special trophies that were to be given at today's races. Thjs was much smaller than any of the past few Mjss Washington races. Miss Washington, Nancy Kay Peterson, gave out the trophies to the trophy dash winners and the winners of the mini·bikes races. Tben the rest of the Main Events were to get started. It started to sprinkle a little as the Consolation and C Mains were running. As the B Mains came up, the rain came down. The rain was here to stay and the A Mains were almost impossible. None of the bikes were equipped for rain and this track is oiled to keep dust down. The rest of the races were slow and many riders dropped out of the events left. Only three riders turned up for the Open A Main. (Results on page 28) Foley Stretches Streak To Six By Bill Spencer LOD!, CAL.,June 18, I971-National Scrambles Champion Jim Foley made it six·in·a·row tonight with decisive wins in both the 250 and 500 Expert Main Events. Last week Foley came off a three·week layoff and won four-out-of-four, and tonight he kept his streak alive_ Since hjs shoulder separation at Vallejo, he seems even more determined to make a third run at the coveted number one spot in District 36. The reverse program brough t up the 500 Experts second and Foley beat out the Old Man of the Central Valley, Ray Huff to the first comer and kept up a lead that couldn't be touched. Huff Iiekwise kept well ahead of third place John Hall. Huff is now riding a 360 Bandido from Zakarian Cycles in Modesto and this great racer·tuner is a partner in the business. It makes for quite a team. In the 250 run Foley kept a narrow margin between himself and Jim Brooks. Brooks was likewise holding off a hard-pressing Mike Renslow and the irrepressible Ray Huff. The most exciting race of the night had to be the 650 Expert Main. The track crew of the Lodi M.C. spent a Gennai Aces Vallejo Experts By James Brammer VALLEJO, CAL., June 18, 1971 John Gennai may be the first rider from the 500cc Expert class to have best the 650's at Vallejo. Riding a 360 Bultaco from Fremont's in the 500-650cc Expert final, he led the 10 laps from start to finish with Ken Helling on a 650cc Triumph in second. However, he could not do the trick in hjs qualifying heat race. Helling led the heat with Gennai catching him each time on the twisty infield course. Twice they went over the jump together but Helling ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• It It It It would easily pull away in the north comer and down the straightaway. Gennai's other wins for the night included the 250 Expert class and the wheelie contest, but he dropped the runoff of the previous week's contest to Dave Russell of the Richmond Ramblers. There is a $50 award for the winner of a four-week series to determine the wheelie champion at Vallejo. Larry Drew picked up his fourth 125 Junior-Expert class win of the season. Jerry Bohon, running in second position in the 200 Junior final, did cart wheels in a spill in front of the grandstand without injury and with no other riders involved. The track was smooth and tacky with the first man off the starting line usually winning the fmaIs. (Results on page 28) great deal of time preparing the surface so it was just about as good as could be expected. When the sporty forties lined up, one of the few that decided to take a practice run was veteran Expert, Dan Hughes. Hughes found the traction to bis liking; on the second lap, he went around the outside of Rick Otto in the first turn and took a commanding lead that could not be bested. Otto gave a desperate effort to catch the fast-departing Hughes, but either poor rear traction or too much wheel spin kept him in second for the duration. Dennis Spence beat out Mike Sarandria for third. In the race for the fair set, blonde beauty Shelly Trammell was no competition for the other girls and even turning the gas on late kept this lovely young lady well ahead of Ginger Burrola for the win. Rudy Jacobs won yet another 650 Junior Main and the Los Gatos flyer will be riding with the Expert very soon if he keeps this up. Second place went to San Jose's Rocky Kramer. Campbell racer Conrad Saxelby continued his domination of the 650 Novice class with yet another win. He bested Harry Feickert of Fair Oaks. Saxclby has recently returned to racing after a lay-off of a year but has shown no sign of having ever left the racing scene. Young Jeff Davidson brought down the house with a tremendous effort in the combined 125 Ex-200 Jr. Main with a come-from-behind start to a tie at the finish line with Dale Stetler. The stand. overflowed during the races, and the event was an outstanding success. The weather hovered around 105 degrees, and the action on the track was furious and fast. The dust was reasonably controlled, and the boys really poured it on down the back stretch at th e one-half mile banked track. Jim Crenshaw continued where he left off the previous night at Cycleland Speedway and won both events he entered. He ran away with the 250 Expert Main winning easily over Jim Foley, known for his number 1 ranking in black plate circles in District 36. He also easily won the Open Expert class, really humming h'is 750cc Norton around the track. Larry Bruckenstein preserved borne town honors by taking first in the 250 Novice Main. Each year tuck conditions improve along with spectator attendance. Some of the unsuccessful riders were heard saying as they left, "J ust wait until next year." A simple enough statement in that the race is only put on once a year.· - **************************************************************************• It : Tenth Annual : ; AMATEUR TT SCRAMBLES : It Cerebral Palsy 'Benefit Motorcycle Races ~ : • : IA.A SI.ct;••e~ I CLASSES flO. 200(( t. 650cc AID S'DE HAC.
