: Two COIII.backs at Ascot By Dick Wright GARDENA, CAL., June 17, 1971 CMC's 250 Senior contest at Ascot Park tonight saw two riders, both having missed action for several months due to injury, get back into the spotlighL Maico's David Boydstun, who is now making the regular rounds, won the fIrst mota and was tied with Glen Lund going in to the fmal. Boydstun cranked a good start when he suddenly shut off, turned around, and went back to the starting line_ Evidentally, he felt it wasn't a good start and wanted a new one. The inexplicable behavior may have cost him the class win. Lund took home the gold while Bob Messer, the other recent returnee, put in three very consisten t rides to take second overall. Jeff Wright enjoyed some more cherry-picking in the 125 Senior class. ;::: COl c ": .., ~ ~ w Z W ..J U > U He was never headed the wbole night. Billy Henderson and Mike Garrett scrambled and took the next two spots. Few riders maintained a good pace in all three motos except Intermediate Ken Cook, who beat most of the EJ<;perts. Scott Smith and Kirk Markham had a wild affair going in the 500 Senior bash. Smith was robbed of a win when David Pessy dropped his bike in front of him_ Markham took the win with Scoll. who is extremely successful in flat-track events, taking the second spot. Tom Simpson rid es a Westlake/Rickman in the 500 Junior class and has been turning out some good performances. ftis smooth style and ability 10 keep the four-stroke delivering power at all times earned him a win. Lacka Light Halts Speedway By Mike Capalite COSTA MESA, CAL., June 18, 1971 - Promoter Harry Oxley has had his share of problems this year. After two rain-outs, it looked like summer had finally come to Southern California. Friday night was about as beautiful a night as one could ask for racing and yet, the Speedway races at the Orange County Fairgrounds had to be cancelled. It seems that the unseasonable heat of the day had caused the heavy drain on the power company through the use of air-conditioners and a transformer had blown out on the power pole that supplies the race track. The Edison Company had assured Mr. Oxley that they would have it repaired in plenty of time for him to go ahead with the races, but at 7 :30 they informed him that there was no possible way they could have it fixed in time so the announcement was made to the already - assembled fans and riders. Mr. Oxley stated that the races will be held next week at the same ti me as usual. With a cool and confident effort as he guided his Montesa, Smith's timinl{ DIRT BIKE magazine the first and only of its kind• Actual dyno readings on test bikes! • In depth coverage of Motocross, Desert, Enduros, Trials • Advice from the experts, technical tips, shootouts! couldn't have been more acute as he slipped under Dan Corbell (Bul) heading into the fmal tum on tbe last lap climaxing one of the evening's best racing duels and winning the 250 IT Main Event. Third place went to Hopkins (BuI) while Mike Lund (Bul) and Bob Sanders (Yam) fmished fourth and fifth. Hopkins, who was nearly disqualified at the starting line after his pit crew repaired a loose sprocket bolt, emerged as the big winner despite being hard pressed by some of the best in the business. The popular rider outlasted Corbell, Bob Goodman (Bul) from Palo Alto, Smith (Mon), and Ken Lee (Mon). In winning, Hopkins on his Steve's Bultaco, established himself as a top favorite for the coveted 250 F.T. championsh ip. Another of the evening's many hot racing duels, the 100 F.T. Main, came to an abrupt end when Bob Sanders (Kaw). working his way from the pack, literally k.nocked Tom Doty (Hon), out of the lead after brushing aginst the Lomita rider while making his move for the lead. Doty, after sliding some 25 feet. was not injured. Sanders made it two in-a-row as he came back to win the l25 F.T. Despite aU Ihe top action throughout the 25-event card, the 100 IT Main provided fans with some early fIreworks between Doty, Sanders and Kirk Redding. Doty (Hon), taking an early lead over Redding (Kaw) and Sanders (Kaw), lost the lead to Sanders as the "Whittier Flash" somehow managed to overtake both riders. Redding, unquestionably one of the hardest riders at Trojan, also went by Doty, and one lap later was about to do likewise to Sanders. However, as Sanders occupied his time in attempting to maneuver Redding to the outside of the track while Redding made his bid to take the lead, Doty was quick to take advantage of the opening and came fIgh ting back to retake the lead and hold it aU the way to the checkered. Finishing second was Sanders over Redding. In the 125 IT Main, a spill at the starting line involving Redding and Wayne Mcintyre (Suz), brought the crowd ot its feet as riders narrowly missed Redding, who was pinned under his machine. A restart saw both riders restarted as Sanders scored a win over Corbett, Doty, Gary Hardin (Yam), and AUen Swett (Hon). The 250 F.T_ Semi Main went to the rider from the San Francisco Bay area. Goodman, as he defeated Sanders, Chris Smith, Hopkins, and Paul Coberly (BuI)_ Not to be denied a win for aU his nigh t's efforts, Corbell was spectacular in chalking his victory in winning the 250 F.T. trophy dash, while Lund took the hardware home for the 250 TT trophy dash. Sanders, to the surprise of noone, won the 100 IT and 100 F.T. trophy dashes.
