SRA SUZUKI SERIES NOW TWO-WAY TIE By Lou Whitney Photo by Dale Coats CALIFORNIA CITY, CAL., June 6, 1971 - A three way tie for the Novice lead in the SRA Suzuki Cyclone Series was broken today when 125cc ace Don Wallingsford had start problems and slipped to a fifth place slot while Mark Granger (500) and Ron Roberts (25) took their wins. This gives Ron and Mark three wins each, but leaves four others with a possible shot at winning the Suzuki 400. First race of the day getting off promptly at 9 :00 was the 250 beginners. O"er 80 riders lined up for the run to the bomb, and when the smoke of battle had cleared for the first lap. Olaf Wolff had his Husky in a fair lead. He wasn't able to hold on however, and managed a fourth. IIdale's Bucky Johnson did the deed on an Ossa, with 42-year-old Tom Jackson breathing righ t down his back at the.finish. Tom had worked up from about sixth on the first lap to show the younger riders the way, but was not able to catch the fleet Johnson. The combined Open and 175 Beginners blasted off next to see Yamaha-mounted Jay Settani lead all the way f"r an. easy win. First I 75 was Nick Simmons on a Yamaha. The most hotly contested race in the world has to be the 100 and 125 Beginners under 16 years old. What these youngsters lacked in riding experience, they more than make up for in sheer determination and fierceness! In the 125 class it was Casey Wasem on a Yamaha. Also in this race were the Powder Puffers, won by 19-year-old Roxanna Jllartin. The girls seem to have more fun than anyone else, judging by the smiles on the faces of finishers. The combined 100 and 125 Novice classes went off with 15-year-old Tim Davison leading at the end of lap one with eventual winner Allen Garrett coming in second. The CZ shot off the line with an awesome burst and put him easily in the lead at the smokebomb_ Last race of the day was the combined 100 and 125 beginners over 16 years old, at 3 :00. It seems that the ones who ride last can't wait for their race to get started and insist on racing around the countryside during the day. An ultimate consequence is a host of broken scooters even before their race gets started. About 45-50 riders answered the bell for the final round and were still able to get to the starting line under their own power. At the final gong, it was Steve Cardwwell on a 125 Rickman taking the checkered for the overall' win.
