and Markel moved around Romero on
the 11 th lap. Sehl stuck to the hard,
black groove and his XR pulled further
and further away from Castro. Don had
his hands full keeping Markel out of his
second place position. By the 16th lap
Don had moved into a comfortable
second and Bart was a safe distance
from Romero in third. Rice was
working on Romero in the last few laps
and on the last, got by Gene to take
fourth.
Dave Sehl picked up his second
National in a row (he didn't ride
Loudon) and l(ave H-D three straight
wins. Castro had made a great comeback
after losing two engines at Louisville;
Markel had thrilled the almost-filled
grandstands with his high and outside
wild slides around the half-mile as he
did his best to win that one National
that will break the tie with Joe Leonard
for th e most Nationals ever won.
After the win, Dave said he couldn't
praise his tuner and builder enough for
the fine job he has done with his
equipment. Babe DeMay seems to have
found the secret to make the Harleys
competi tive.
