Tonight nothing could stop him, including Mel Lacher. The BSA threat kept charging and closing from second place until the ninth lap of the final . Then Houchins was there and waiting for that one mistake by Lacher. It came on the north turn and Lloyd sailed by on the inside for his first main event win of '71. Lacher, the winner the previous week. took the loss of the lead hard and dropped off th e pace to even tually end up in sixth position. With only three laps to go, Dewayne Keeter was far back in fifth place, running the high groove. The last two laps found the groove that worked. Coming out of the final turn Dewayne caught AI Baker who had looked like a sure second place finisher with only a few yards to go. Baker left about a foot between himself and the crash wall at the finish line and it was all Keeter need to squeeze by the more-than-surprised Baker for second place at the line. Loyal Penn returned fresh from his Loudon road race victory to win his heat race but tried to "road race" the final, completely wearing out the rear tire and fmishing last after running as high as third earlier. Lacher saved some of the nigh t by topping Houchins in the dash, becoming the first Expert this year to win back-to-back dash victories. Houchins came from last for a closing second. The Novice action found added interest when point leader Scott Brelsford got off to a poor start in the 250 final. Both Brelsford and Steve Nichols won their heat races earlier with Nichols a shade faster over the five lap distaDce. ichols jumped into the lead in the final with Brelsford in nin tho Scott knocked off position after position and was th ird at the end of four and then passed Gary Caldwell for second spot on lap five. Then it was hunry, hurry, but too late, as Nichols again rode a near perfect eight laps to top Brelsford for tfie second straight week at the Gardena oval. The poi~ t gap between Nichols and Brelsford IS now tighter than ever before. Houchins has now taken the point lead away from Jady Nicholas in th e Expert divisio n. The now-weekly Saturday night event played to a near-capacity crowd with ideal night weather conditions. Eddie Wirth took fast-time honors but had to settle for third in the heat race. Wirth then came storming back to win the semi with a faster five laps then any of the heat races. Eddie and his Norton got over-extended in the final • trying to pass on the wrong part of the track. Chalk up another crash for Big Ed. Dorsch was the man to beat, losing only the time trial battle. The former Scrambles champ won his heat race and then followed it up with another Trophy Dash win. The final was nip-and-tuck all the way and Dorsch was at th e limit from start to finish thanks to BSA-mounted Lloyd Houchins. The two got out in front of the pack early and it was a toss-up until the final tum. Dorsch held and scored his second straight main event win. This now gives him six straight victories at the new Corona oval without a loss in actual competi tion. ~1any out-of-state riders were on '0 Six hand but only Albuquerque's Mike Collins could crack the main event lineup. Collins. showing a lot of promise, grabbed a third in the heat behind Dorsch and a close second behind Wirth in the semi to get into the final. Novice action again featured the nation's top two Novices, Scott Brelsford and Steve Nichols. Brelsford was looking for his second straight sweep at the new well lighted fast oval but a fouled plug corning off the line in the heat race knocked him out of action for the nigh t. Nichols went on to score in both the heat and final to go undefeated for the weekend at both Corona and Ascot. Corona features an 8:00 p.rn. starting time with a 10:00 p.m. closing deadline. A Corona city councilman was on hand to present the dash trophy to Terry Dorsch and also check out if there really is a noise problem as stated by those who live over a mile south of the track. Race director J .C. Agajanian expressed a strong desire to cooperate in any way possible. Therefore, the Novice 250 machines only will be required to run some type of muffling device next aturday nigh t.
