N N Fisk Gets First Big 500 Win, Hoover S.ashes 125-Exp.rts 8. ~ ;;: '" It; .. c .... " ~ w Z W ...J U > U By John Shedd POMONA, CALIF., June 6,1971 -Jim Hoover, a brand, spanking new Expen was the star of the CMC motocross held today at Osteen's Park. Ever since Bill Urban dropped out of the 125cc Expen competition, Jim Beauchamp, DKW, has bad things pretty much his own way, winning about every race he's entered tmished a very determined second In a last minute bid, Beauchamp roared past the flag and almost clobbered a Mustang belouging to one of the pretty young scorekeepers. Final tally, Hoover 2 wins and a second, Beauchamp 2 seconds and a win. Good going for a fIrSt time Expert. Marty Tripes rode his red Rickman to A bunch of 500 Experts fight off the pre-race boogies before embarking on that pulse-pounding journey. Chuck Minert is the only one who looks confident, Riekman ace Marty Tripes (53) takes a concerned glance at Billy Urban. who is doing a fine imitation of Barry Briggs. Urban won the mota. took second overall behind Marty. But today, along comes Jim Hoover, also on a DKW, on his first ride as an Expert and Beauchamp was wishing that all he had to contend with was Billy Urban. Hoover, whose home is in Upland, won the llrSt moto from a surprised Beauchamp who came in second Beauchamp rallied to win the second one, but he might as well not have bothered. In the crucial third moto Hoover led all the way and Beauchamp -****************- : Yamaha & : : Triumph : : of Fontana : - : Sales 'arfs Sen;ce : 8) - - - Maico. DKW. CZ, Hodaka. Many's closest competition was Bill Urban, who did managed to nose Tripes out to win the second moto. Bob Fisk earned enough points for the third overall spot with a sixth, a founb and a third. Fisk, who didn't make mucb of a showing, in the 250 class, really went all out when the 500s rolled. BSA pilot Chuck Minen dampened Fisk's spirits by winning the first mota, but Bob managed a second with Rob Norgaard third In the second moto Fisk could not be denied the win. Minen was a solid second but he could not get by the younger CZ rider. In the last moto, Fisk roared into the lead at the fIrSt comer, and Minen, who was tied with him for fint place on points, was dead last off :he line. The high pitched sound of the CZ led the pack, and the deep throated growl of the BSA passed the other riden one by one until Minert was in second. By this time Fisk had a safe lead and he coasted in for the class 'l'in. Minen earned second place money, and Rob Norgaard earned third place points. SRI;'" Endures 1ro, 50 Lapper By Art SOUTH GATE, CALIF., June 3, 1971 - Chris Smith talks a good race. He rides one even better. The popular, under-rated rider from Ontario. aboard his Montesa from Don's Cycles, won more than just the 50-lap TT 250cc Main Event and $100. He has won a page in the history book of Trojan Speedway. There are riden who do it with speed and there are those who do it with cunning, but Smith wins with his head and stubborn determination. Trailing early leader Danny Corbett (Bul), Smith lost control of his machine on lap 18 and hit the wall coming out of tum one, Chris still managed to save his runner-up position with a spectacular save. Smith said the race went "almost exactly" the way he thought it would go as Corbett out.jumped Smith at the start to lead the first lap over Smith, Steve Scott (BuI), Dale Hopkins (Bul), and Mike Clarke (BuI). A broken primary chain eliminated Scott from competition on lap 12, and two laps later, Hopkins fell victim to a faltering engine while riding in third position. Dropping way back in the 12-rider field and ,lapped by leaders, Corbett and Smith, Hopkins bitterly foujb t his way back to finish third.. Corbett's bid for his fint major Loya victory in this event disappeared when ignition troubles 'declined him from the lead as he headed into the pits on lap 26. Tom Warren of Nonh Hollywood rode his Bultaco to a well-earned second place finish and was followed by Hopkins, Craig Steigler (Bul), Bruce Nordstrom (Yam), and Dick Kellstrom (Ossa). All six finishen shared a $300 pune. Newcomer to the Trojan bike battles, Ken Lee (Mon) of Riverside, upset a top flight field of riden in the 250 F.T. Main. Lee, out for his fIrSt ride after a one year absence from competition, won over Steigler, Scott, Pat Eagan (BuI), and Mike Anselm (Kaw). Roy Widener (Kaw) one of the most unpublicizM top riden, pulled out all the stops to win over Bob Sanden (Kaw) and Tom Doty (Hon) in the 100 TT Main. Sanden who found competition just a little tougher this time out, came back to win the 125 TT, 100 F.T. and 125 F.T. Main Events, but not before overcoming some stiff competition from Steve Okuda (Kaw) in the latter two even ls. Sander's win in the 125 F.T. Main came aboard a Yamaha instead of his usual Kawasaki ride.
