By Dave Brown APPLE VALLEY, CAL., May 29-30, 1971 - Deadman's Point saw some of its best racing this weekend- The show was started on Saturday with the All-J unior day and everyone was going for 50% trophies. There were 224 Juniors and Intermediates, all shooting for part of the 100+ pieces of mandeware. All had their fastest hotshoe forward and they all did an outstanding job in the run for the gold. The only problem came when young (7 yrs. old) Keith Nelson walked across the track at the wrong time and his personal battle with a 360 Yamaha netted him 5 stitches in the head. • Sunday saw the dawning of another excellent day and one of the largest Senior sign-ups at the "Point". There were 200+ riders with more than 40 of them being Seniors. The Juniors again did excellent battle but the Seniors put on the ushow supreme". The 100 Seniors started it off with Kawasaki-mounted Lee Peterson taking soLid victories in the flrst and second mo to. He then led the third moto but gave into pressure by Joe Flores and Lonnie Brimer, both Hodaka-mounted. Lee maintained third for an easy overall win with Flores capturing second and third going. to Brimer. The 125 Senior go had all the spectators on their feet and near the track to catch the action. There was so much place swapping and dicing it was up in the air to the final checker. Scott Hoffee pushed his Bultaco out to_ the PENTON MX SERIES The CMC and Penton West groups have gotten together and set up a series of six motocross races to be run at Saddleback Park and' Carlsbad this summer. Larry ~ Watkins rode 3 consistent races to gain ~ second overall aboard his DKW with w Gary Bevans bringing his Yamaha back from a lust moto get-off to hold third. ~ The 250's also got it on with a full U race duel going between Ron Peterson on his CZ and Yamaha-mounted Dave Williams. Ron was in front at the white flag but he mistook it for the checkered and pulled into the pits. Dave went on for the win with second to Glen Lund on his Rickman and Ron getting back up to third. The second moto belonged to Jerry Willmon. He pushed his CZ to the lead and kept it there. Again Ron Peterson and Dave Willimas battled throughout for the runner-up spot with Ron getting the decision and Lund slipping into third by the checker. The third moto started with Ron out front and Glen pressing hard. Halfway through Glen got beside Ron over the big jump and as they hit, Ron lost it. Glen motored on for the win with Jerry coming up for second. Third went to Williams. At the end, Lund had the gold with Willmon second, Williams third and Peterson fourth. The 500 race belonged to Rob Norgaard on his CZ. He pushed out to easy wins in the first and second motos. Larry Watkins followed for second place in the lust moto but in the second Lund pushed Norgaard to the checker. Glenn Hughes poked his CZ out in front in the third. Then he and Rob got it on. They had a terrific battle going when, on the fifth lap they both went dowll- Watkins put his 400 Suzuki into the lead and eventually the win. Lund was righ t on his tail for second, with Norgaard and Hughes back in the battle for third and fourth, respectively. The overall cash went to orgaard with a consistent Watkins in for second.
