The action was heavy for the Memorial Weekend at Placerville. Grossi,Darnell in MX Show By Margaret Eamest Photo by Bill Czervinski SANTA MARIA, CAL., May 30, 1971 - Lompoc SIc-Pokes played host to nearly 300 riden for their two-day event for the 4th Larry Fessenden Memorial Motocross held at· the brand new, as yet unnamed, motocross track in the Santa Maria riverbed. Camping was available so many riden and their families stayed overnight to take advantage of the reduced entrY fee for the second day. The 125 Sr. class had a hex on it both days, Johnny Groisini and Paul McDaniels both on 125 Suzukis had bike problems, threw a chain, loose , spokes, etc., to the extent tha.t Grossini, between matos, drove 50-miles round trip for extra parts and had his mount ready to go for the third. These two were wheel to wheel, last lap, last corner when McDaniels fell. Grossini was too close and rode over the back of McDaniels breaking Grossini's front wheel. Both riden walked away, slowly, but never the less walking. Monday's toll was almost as l?ad. Scott Frisby held the lead when he broke all spokes. Vince Clark then took the lead until he lost his clutch and consiste,:!t Mike David took advantag~ of all these problems and came home for the checkered flag and first overall on his DKW. The 100 Junion moaned and groaned when told the Powder Puffs would be combined; their chief'complaint: the girls hold them back. But, that wasn't the case either day as Cherry Stockton (Bul) and Kathy Montgomery, aboard a Super-Rat, got the checkered long before most of the male pack came through. G'oad sportsmanship and heroism showed up in the 250 Seniors and an unknown rider should be given proper credit. Donnie Kalin, on a Suzuki, went down and was pinned by his bike, unable to get up. The next lap Donnie was still· lying there so an unidentified rider stopped during his race to assist him and continued racing when he knew Donnie was unhurt. Donnie wishes to extend a special thank-you, whoever you are! John Caldwell, 250 Jr., hel4 the lead by a third of a lap and seemed to be coasting to the win when from out of nowhere, as if he dropped from the sky, Rex Brown was right on his tail and John realized too late and Brown took the win although had had to be satisfied for a second place overall. Open Sr. class was a sight to behold. Bob Grossi, Russ Damell and Jim West combined with local talent. Damell held the lead for awhile until Grossi, on his Husky zapped him for the overall win. The 250 Srs. and Open Srs. were combined on the second day as the entry was somewhat smaller; each class was scored separately. Jeff Little, a 250 Sr. got quite a thrill when he passed Damell on the last lap on the straigh taway 100 yards from the finish line but the 400 Suzuki out-powered Little at the checkered. Darnell made a special point of congratulating and shaking hands with Little for a good ride. . The weather was rather threatening most of the time but made for good riding both days and fast laps. The course was in very good shape and made for good traction. Spectator viewing is much improved with large mounds located on the inside with visibility from all angles. A contest is underway for a name for this track with the prize a pass for one year to all events, so get your suggestioris to theownen or the Lompoc Sio-Pokes.
