:Rough Week at_ Vallejo Speedway Few Survive Vallejo TT :' Ramblers Stage ~ Aussie Pursuit ~ ~ w d t By James Brammer VALLEJO, CAL., May 23, 1971 Until Sunday, I don't recall a memorable Australian pursuit race. The Richmond Ramblers ended their once·a-month IT scrambles at the Vallejo Speedway with an exciter provided by winner Ken Helling and John Furtado. Ken Helling, a 650cc Expert class rider, started from last handicapped position and won the Australian pursuit race when he passed John Furtado on a 100cc Kawasaki who started from the number one position. The track was narrowly grooved making passing difficult. Eighth place handicap starter, Bill TrumbuU eliminated six riders passing them one at a time. He then pursued John Furtado who now had a wide lead; but as TrumbuU pursued his engine buzzed out leaving a 650cc Expert class rider versus a 100cc Novice. Helling hadn't been in any hurry. After aU, any rider would have to pass trim to win. He still lacked one rider between his last place start and TrumbuU's "ighth. Cheered on, he pursued eliminating the one rider in between his position and Furtado's half-lap lead. Unable to gain on the twisty course through the infield, Helling called on the horsepower that carried him into high speed comers on the outside edge of the narrow groove. As he would bore into the comers the rear tire would grab and then.slide with the rubber wearing out and the heavyweight sliding more as the laps continued. It took 10 laps to catch and then instantly pass Furtado. The track photographer put up $5 to the winner, but what Hellings needs now is a new tire. An AJS ridden by Kent Johnson of Concord made first in the 500cc Novice class winner's circle. Jim Coasts leading the 100cc Novice class final feU coming out of the last comer with Furtado going on to take first place. In the 175cc Novice final, Mark Dunaway on a Rickman is the strongest rider going this year at Vallejo. On the third lap, he moved by Rich Parkinson for second and then on the last lap he passed Kelvin Deemer to fmish first, Point Richmond is not available for the ,Richmond Ramblers so they have scheduled their 1971 scrambles series at the Vallejo Speedway. There are five remaining dates spaced about a month apart with the next to be on June 27. Signup is from 9 to 11 a.m. and racing starts at noon. (Results on page 24) Now at E. T. MOley No Ilceitive to Sile.ce By Bill Spencer MORGAN HILL, CAL., May 23, 1971 - Any trophy winner that had an approved muffler on his bike at the CampbeU scrambles could have won himself five bucks. One 200 rider had one on and took home the five spot while the other 200 some odd didn't think it would do them any good. Others had them on but didn't get a trophy, they were so few that paying each one that did have it wouldn't have amounted to much money. Interesting, it seems that even money doesn't seem to convince people to keep the noise down. Pat McCaul borrowed a Bultaco to win the 250 Expert Main Event over John Gennai and Steve Foster. The last time these three rode against each other, they rode three different machines, now they ride the same, quite a game of musicial bikes. McCaul seems quite at home on this new machine and held off Gennai for the distance. Foster had to hold off Nick Nazzisi early in the race and then John IDebo. HIebo feU twice but kept on coming back to keep everybody busy. His young brother, Jeff beat off hard attacks from Scott Williams to win the 250 Novice Main. Williams is a protege of the District No. 11 rider and between the three, they keep this track very busy. Tom Seidel started dead last in the 350 Jr. go but was the winner over Rod Steyding after some very fast and pCci.llilillg in competition equipment Mac~il's spectacular passing on this very dusty and slippery track. Bruce Anderson won yet another 650 Expert run. He beat Rick Otto and Ron Talbot to remain the king of this very fast facility. Otto and Talbot gave a hard chase but this former Ascot IT star had it all his own way. Gennai wasn't having anymore second place efforts today and so he borrowed a 400 Suzuki from the Jensen clan and waxed the 500 Expert Main. John Silvll kept his C·Z in for the second place in front of Larry Shcultz's Honda. This happened tonight in Vallejo, where the American Canyon M.e. put on another program of Sportsman IT racing. In fact, because of the many accidents, the last four main events were reduced from five·to three-lap races, and the night's activity was wrapped up at half·past midnight! Jim Foley, black plate No. I, was shook put pretty bad on the start of the 250 Expert heat race, and at this writing his condition is unknown. Jim walked from the crash to the pit area, but the ambulance later took him to the hospital for a check-up. Larry Drew of Petaluma, Cal., had an easy win in the 125 Jr/Ex. combined class with John Davidson (Yam) fighting for a hard-earned second. (Apparently Larry's Bul runs faster now that it's broken in.) Roger Brunei of Castro Valley, Cal. (Bul), showed the 250 Experts how to get around the track the quickest. Bill TrumbuU, black plate No. 12 (Yam) got a bad start, but by the end of the fifth lap had worked himself into third. He was putting pressure on Dennis Robinson with some stylist riding when they took the checkered flag. Ken Helling of Martinez, Cal (Tri) jumped right into the lead in the 650 Expert Main and never slacked off, but Jim Brooks of Hayward, Cal. chased him all the way. Mike Sarandria of San Francisco, Duane Spence of Fremont and Phil Ray 0 f Santa Clara, all 0 n Triumphs, had a real battle going on for third. Finally Duane got under Mike with Ray foUowing. Those boys just don't seem to know when to turn off. (Results on page 28) SALES SERVICE REPAIRS Complete machine shop - ..
