.......- -- .--..........--.. . . .- ._----e~_ lompoc, Santa Maria Mayors Open New Motocross Track By Margaret Earnest LOMPOC, CAL, May 16, 1971 Would you believe a Mayor of a city riding mo tocross? Would you believe two Mayors of two cities riding motocross? Especially when every time you pick up your Cycle News you find another riding area has been closed to us "undesirables?" District 35 has been hurting for motocross since the Lompoc Slo-Pokes laid off racing at Santa Maria Speedway and K.C. Trailblazers no longer run Poso Park. Dunlap won't be running AMA events, eitller. A few months back an enterprising individual whose son is an avid racers saw an opportunity to get some acreage in the Santa Maria riverbed for a motocross track. The legal angles were unbelievable since the riverbed seems to have half a dozen agencies with jurisdiction over certain do's and don'ts. Several hassles later, the first mo tocross was held, sponsored by the Lompoc Sio-Pokes with nearly 160 entries. The turnout was fantastic and the response from riders was unbelievably favorable, despite the many changes and improvements necessary. Pro TT Hits Gra ham By Mason Sorensen GRAHAM, WASH., May 14, 1971 Graham's first night of professional racing saw a large crowd turnout under cloudy skies. Rain had fallen during the preceding 24 hrs., but the race was run free of the wet stuff. The track was very hard and fast and grooves fonned early in the turns. The north tum was tricky going by the end of the program and several riders met disaster in this section. A purse of $1645 was divided between the professionals. The three fastest qualifiers for the night were Dick Waller with 19.43, Don McLeod with 19.54, and Emil Ahola with 19.67 - all on Triumphs. The Expert trophy dash saw McLeod grab the lead and hold off a charging Ahola. JOYNER, SCOTT TT VICTORS By N. A. Williams CLACKAMAS, ORE., May 14, 1971 When Juniors Randy Scott (Tri) and Gary Kapus (Yarn) came through with fastest qualifying times of 15.41 and 15.46, the crowd anxiously awaited the running of the Junior Main during ProfessioRaI IT tonight hoping far a tigh t battle. In 1970, as Novices, these two really put on some shows. This was Gary's first time out this year and Randy had taken the last two races without much effort. A renewed battle was expected. Kapus- got off to a good start in the 10-lap main while Scott was caught in the pack. As the riders began to spread out, Scott found his way through and began chewing up the lost ground- on Kapus and AI Perella (Nor) who were dicing at the point. Scott finally caught the pair and after a couple of nip and tuck laps, he slipped into the lead to hold it for the duration to win. Kapus and Perella continued to figh t it out, this time for second, and Perella managed to force Kapus to third. The Expert Main got off poorly as Squire Tomasie (Tri) pulled a wheelie off the line and lost his machine which cut across the front of the line to dump Bill Elder (Tri). Neither rider was hurt. With the main riders now numbering eigh t, Ch uck Joyner (Tri) plowed in to an early lead and held the rest off for the 15-lap win and his share of a $1500 purse. Sonny Burres (Tri) took second. The Novice events saw several riders down in the heats but no injuries were apparent. Jerry Whitlow (BuI) led most of the way and finished a strong first. Forest Hiner (Bul) copped second. (Results on page 26) In the main event, McLeod again grabbed the lead, chased by Ahola and young Pat Marinacci. Through the dog leg and into the north tum McLeod held his lead. Then he lost it, did a spectacular end-o, and was out of the race. Marinacci and Ahola battled each other furiously for the remainder of the race. Marinacci caught Ahola at the beginning Of lap five on the north turn, got the inside and took the lead. Then, on lap eight, Ahola regained the lead by passing Marinacci in the same spot in almost the same fashion. Ahola went on to win. John Bromley (H-D) looked strong in moving up to get third behind Marinacci. Mark Nimich, on a Harley-Davidson, beat Don Lipp (Yam) by a bike length in a tigh t duel for the Junior troph y dash. In the Junior Main, Nimich, having grabbed the early lead, fell in approximately the same spot McLeod had done his endo in the Expert Main. Tom Watterson, on a Yamaha, collided with N imich and tIi e race was red-flagged for a restart. On the second run, Lipp got the lead . and held on to win. A strong bit of charging from Randy Skiver on a Triumph had the crowd buzzing. Skiver came from the back line to get fourth after two laps. When the checkered .flag fell on Lipp, Skiver was only three lengths back in second. Some excellent riding was exhibited by the Novices. Heat winners included Steve Baker (Yarn), Jim Pomeroy (Bul), Jim Einarsson (H-D) and Sam Martin (BuI). The main saw Fred Siegel grab the early lead. Pomeroy and Baker passed Siegel on lap two and battled each other with Pomeroy showing some great style as he rode to his victory. Main at Adams 125 Seniors was a "who's on first" -type race with Paul McDaniels, Mike David, Vince Clark and Ray Marshall dicing back and forth for first place. McDaniels took the jump flying solo and shattered his front hub, Clark holed a piston, and Marshall lost his carburetor. Sole survivor David took the win on his 125 Sachs. 250 Jrs. had two CZ riders, Shennan Schneller and John Caldwell, vying for fmt place. In the last moto Caldwell neglected to fasten his helmet and Schneller ended up first. Caldwell took home the second place trophy. Lompoc Sio-Pokes honor district 37 cards but when you live in district 35 you have the op.tion of purchasing a 35 card or riding Senior. A ftrst place trophy winner today used a 37 card and signed up as a Junior although in this district he is a Senior. We hope both your trophies trun green, J.C.! Sio-Pokes put on a specialty bash which was complicated but fun. They took the fastest lap times during the motos of the leaders, not necessarily the winners, and handicapped them. The fmt and second place winners in all classes and ran a moto according to their handicap. This meant some of the fastest had to wait on the line three minutes or more before getting the flag. A few qualifiers showed a little temper but for the most part the riders had a ball. Next race will be Sunday, May 30 . and the sponsoring club will again reduce an entry fee if a silencer is used. The watering system will be improved and a p.a. system made available. (Results on page 26) SHORT TRACK SERIES PRO UTAH MX Sacramento, Calif. Point Standings 1. Mike O'Brien 2. Bob Scally 3.
