-'" :Gennai Finishes Last ~ But Steals Alviso Show <) the finish. Mike Allen won y~t another 100 Novice Main, this tIme over Jim Ferguson and Craig Rogers, who is no newcomer to the winner's circle. Little Chuck Kole held off the charges of Danny Jensen and Bob Hammon to win the 125 Novice affair and his older brother was in complete charge of the 200 Novice Main over Ron J ones and Steve Powell. These two riders are very seldom out of the running at any race. Scott Williams reversed today's score from last night's at Hayward where he got a third and Ron Hannah was the winner in the 250 Novice race. Roy Taboda led it off with Hannah and Williams all dicing for the lead until Williams finally took command and the checkered. • Nick Nazzisi started off the 250 Junior heat well but got in a wingding -that found him laying on the ground and out of the race. Rod Clark was the winner with Randy Searl and Ken Eggers following close behind. Ken Eggers? That name sounds familiar. In the 500 Expert run, it was Brian O'Hagan, the victory on a Selby Montesa and after having run that race as well as the 250 20-lapper, Brian was having hand seizure problems. The only way to stay in shape! Adam Sabbedra survived the beast in the very accident prone 650 Novice Main and was the winner over John Hernandez who won the last outing. (Results on page 26) By Bill Spencer ALVISO, CAL., May9,1971-Itwasa slim turnout of riders for the Eastsrde running of Mother's Day Scrambles but the racing was just as exciting. in the 250 and 650 Experts runs 20 lap features were scheduled. Pat McCaul was the winner in the 250 Expert affair but the crowds attention was on John Gennai. Gennai and McCaul led off the race with Rick Hocking and Steve Hernandez close in tow. Exiting the wide first tum, Gennai dumped and was very nearly run over by the entire pack. He remounted and slowly got under way, at least slow enough so that they passed him once again in the first tum. This put him two laps down with 18 left to run. At this point he really turned the gas back on. Within. another lap he started to pass back and by the end of the race he was back at the front. The stands were in an uproar as on the last lap John pulled ahead of Hocking and Fernandez and pulled right 6ehind McCaul As they exited the last comer, Gennai got a terrific drive off the corner and shot ahead of McCaul to the delight of the crowd only to finish dead last, but having the satisfaction of unlapping himself. In the 650 Expert runoff, a rare appearance by class "C" Junior Dave Bellina brought in the wire to wire win over Stever Hernandez and Bill Budde. Bellina had little trouble until the end when young Steve gave a hard charge and nearly beat out Bellina's Triumph at Chill Winds Cool Cycleland excellent hard riding ability when things began to happen. First he attempted to miss a fallen rider by darting to the inside of the track, and at that time a rider behind him ran directly into him from the side, over him, and continued around the traCk leaving Rollen fallen, shaken and very bruised. He, during the next 200cc event, again was riding with determination when again a ride~ fell in fro))t of him causing Rollen to go over, down, and again getting run over by those behind him. Yes, it simply was not RaUen's night. However, next week, well, that's another racing night. By J oh n Noffsinger CHICO, CAL., May 15, 1971 - A very cold north-west wind put warm bodies under cold blankets at Cycleland Speedway during the course of the third seasonal event here. Great gusts of cold air would whip through the stands chilling spectators and riders alike to the bone. However, even though a few people did leave the races before main event time, the real die-hard race fans kept to their seats drinking coffee, hot tea, and spits to keep their minds active while their bodies fough t for warmth. Cold weather or not, Jeff Ferdnandez, (H-D) prevailed in the 250cc Handicap Main winning his first ever main here. Jeff is a regular rider at Cycleland and has been turning left hand comers at the track for several seasons. This evening he really had his Harley moving and he stretched his lead from beginning to end over such accomplished riders as Jim Crenshaw, Joe Allen, Dick Turner, and Mike Corcoran. Bob Ross, age 14, rode an Ossa like a veteran to a second place finish. He appears quite accomplished for his age and when he really gets to handling the bike - watch out. In the 200cc class, last year's 100cc National Champ in flattrack racing, Rollen Eskew, took his lumps. Rollen, a charger, was riding an real under-powered Yamaha and was more than making up for loss of power with Two More for Grossi MORGAN HILL, CAL., May 16, 1971 - Bob Grossi is no longer at odds with the Army - he's gotten a deferment and now that he's got a clean slate for the coming months, he's going all out to prepare for his trip to Europe this fall. Today, the Husky pilot competed in the MRA Motocross at Cycle Hills and racked up two more wins against his name; coming in the 250cc and Open Senior classes. In each case Russ Powell (Bul) charged in for a second. Randy Lackey, brother to Brad who is currently in Europe battling for the CZ factory in world competition, guided his Puch to a first overall in the 125 Sr. ahead of Ron Huffman (Ric) and Bob Grossi's younger brother, Bill (DKW). Around here, it seems, the competition is all in the family. (Results on page 26) COLISEUM CYCLE and MAIL ORDER ACCESSORY CO. ~KAWASAKI . . . ~ MOTORCYCLES 3958 E. 14th ST., OAKLAND, CAL. Short Track Aids Rose Festivities By Jam.es Brammer SANTA ROSA, CAL., May 15, 1971 If you were in Sonoma County over the weekend and not world champion caliber at wristwrestling or like Snoopy with no thumb or could not find Petaluma, then you surely were charmed by the fund raising activities that are a part of the Rose Festival in Santa Rosa. Every recreational interest group contributes by sponsoring fund raising events. One of the largest contributors is the North Bay Motorcycle Club with proceeds from an annual amateur short track racing benefit at the Chris Beck Arena. Through the courtesy of the Santa Rosa Jaycees, Miss Suzanna Lowe, Maid of Sonoma County, appeared to do the trophy girl chores. Admitted, her ego was shattered when Rich Huggard, 100cc Novice winner, refused to remove his helmet for a buss. She's lucky they weren't Ascoteers. Rick Lewis methodically worked his way from third position to f11'St in the 200cc Junior final. First, he passed Joe Heckmann and then with two laps to go he moved into first by passing Robert Wyman. In the 250cc Novice final, Ed Hausamann on a hard charge broke from the center of the pack and after gaining f11'St with no one left to dice, he fell. In the 250cc Junior final, Rich Dashiell chased Steve Deckard for several laps and then passed him to win. On the early laps of the 250cc Expert class, Ron Davies was leading F enn Pervier, Larry Drew and Mike O'Brien and Bill Stockham. Many of Bill's motocross riding friends showed up and the spectator turnout was the best of the season. As trophies were donated by Central Oregon merchants, all money taken in went into a special bank account for St. Jeor. A total of $303 was raised. The Cascade MIC wishes to thank all riders, spectators, and trophy donors who helped in this cause. Young Randy Limbeck did it again as he rode two classes and won five out of six motos_ Limbeck rides a Poweroll Performance Honda in the 125 class, and a Maico in the 250 class. Local riders are wishing some out of town hotshoe will show up at one of the races and blow him into the weeds. The Open class was a runaway for Maico rider Doug Aiken who even stopped during the 3rd moto for a drink of water. Ron Brown, riding a beautiful 500 Cheney Triumph, took three seconds with very little challenge from the other riders.
