JIM FOLEY FIRST AT CYCLE HILLS SCRAMBLES
By BiB Spencer
MORGAN HILL, CAL., May 2,1971 Despite an intermittent shower rolling
through the Santa Cruz Mts. and
keeping the spectators away, the second
Los Gatos M.C. Scrambles was another
thriller with slightly over 200 riders
signing up. The big race of the weekend
was to be the Archie Clark Memorial at
Lodi, Calif., but the rains dampened the
spirit and the track and required some
fast telephoning to Cycle Hills to keep
sign·up open long enough for the nearly
three hour drive back to the Bay area.
National scrambles champ Jim Foley
was the easy winner in the fast and
furious 250 Expert Main, coming of[
the back row to work through a hole in
the line and drag race the crew to the
first tum. John Gennai was next to him
in the back row and held down the
second spot [or the distance with Steve
Foster. working his way through the
pack for third.
Curren t poin t leader Mike Renslow
was eliminated in the heat when be
went wide at the bottom of the course
and slipped ou t. His an tics while leading
were great for the spectator but
certainly didn't help him in his quest for
the District Number One plate. At the
intermission, he was seen doing a rain
dance that worked for a few minutes
but then the sun came back out and the
track was in good shape.
San Jose's Nick Nazzisi brought home
the brass for the Sonny Kenyon Racing
Team with a wire to wire win in the 250
Jr. Main. Randy Miller, a fellow Kenyon
racer, held second [or three laps and
kept the pack in check but couldn't
hold it and wound up third.
A stray dog kept Ron Landice from
maintaining his domination of the 250
Novice class. With an easy lead set up he
was about to start lapping the field
when a stray dog ran across the track.
Landice
struck
the
animal
and
miraculously kept the bike under control
but lost the lead and the win to Scott
Williams. Williams was second at the last
run here and the two are now tied for
the point lead in the 250 division with
Foley.
Vic Sloane played a waiting game for
the 'start of the 500 Expert run and
made it payoff with a win. Too many
jump starts kept the starter busy and
when the flag finally flew, Sloane and
his Selby Mon tesa were on their way.
Ivan Shigemasa held second for most of
the affair but Larry Frey slipped by
near the end and challenged Sloane but
to no avail.
Henry Sanchez sported a new number
in the 650 Junior Main and went on to
an easy win over Roy Geddie and cousin
Paul Sanchez.
.
Bill Landsborough jetted into the
lead [or the 650 feature event and
thoroughly devastated the rest of the
pack. Bob Boaz and Steve Hernandez
fought it out for second with Boaz
getting the honors.
