M Gennai Tops Black Platers By Dick Sorensen VALLEJO, CAL., May 7,1971 - When you have more than 400 riders signing up for an evening of IT racing, you can expect to be around for awhile, and that we were. Especially after an hour and a half delay from practice time to the beginning of the first heat. Apparently the new AMA sign-up forms (used for the first time here) were the delay, but the officials felt the new forms were smaller and better to handle. Now, that everyone is familiar with them, the weekly Friday nigh t sign-ups should go much smoother and quicker in the future. With the newly installed rubber band for starting strung up, the 100 Novices drew for their starting position and then lined up on the rehabitated, smooth, fast track and the program for the evening began with three laps heats and five lap mains. More than 1,000 spectators were ready for the thrills of watching sportsman IT racing at its best, in this natural terrained arena. In the 125 Expert Main Rick Hocking (Bul) had no problem with a first place, but Larry Drew (Bul) and J. Davidson (Yam) had a nose to nose battle for second with the Yamaha winning out. Perhaps Larry's new Bultaco will be faster next week, now that it's broken-in. . The 250 "B" Main proved interesting (because of time limitations, semis were not run), when Steve Whitney (Bultaco) had to work himself up from the middle of the pack to a hard earned third. Steve is one of the not-to-be·novice-very-long riders, if he keeps going like he has been. The 250 Experts really showed the crowd how it's done, with No.3 Black plater John Gennai (Bul) taking the lead and holding it for the win. Jim Foley (Yam) of Lafayette got a bad start but worked himself up to second, but no chance of catching Gennai who had a big lead. It looked like every· black plate in the District turned up at this event, which made for some very, very good heat and main events. Pro.o'er Offer.s .. Cas' for Si'elee By N. A. Williams ST. HELENS, ORE., May 1,1971 - St. Helens Speedway official Keith Forsythe announced that $10 would be awarded to any winner of an A Main that rode a mu ffled machine. Forsythe' said that he wan ts to encourage riders to ' use them now before the track is forced to adopt the policy of requiring them. He would like to see all machines 'voluntarily silenced by the end of the season. In the 500 Expert Main, Jim Foley wasn't about to have a repeat of the 250 race, and didn't. For the second week in a row he won the 500 Expert Main and showed the boys why he wears the No. 1 plate. The 650 Expert Main was canceled, after a start when three riders went down and one was sent to the hospital with an apparent fractured leg, with the ambulance gone and it being 12:30 a.m. the officials called it a night. The American Canyon M.C.'s organization was evident; once the racing started it continued without delays or confusion. (Results on page 26) III N > ., :; ~ w Z W ...J U >- U Hilleli.'
