SNOWfLAIE Kenney In Europe Hi again folks, this is Snowflake reporting back from Bryan Kenney and the AMXT after two more harrowing races in France. Around the third week in April, we were admiring a well laid-out course on a steep billside just outside the village of Sourdeval. This race went quite well for the old man judging by his fourth overall for the day. During the better part of two The Author motos he was having it out with the Dutchman, Jan Keizer, and to my great relief came out ahead. A German, Hans Maisch, and a Swede, Keith Franzen, filkd the top two spots. These two countries really seemed to have discovered the magic breakfast cereal! Third place went to a Dane, Johannes Mortensen, one of the few four-stroke devotees still around. During morning practice I took my usual tour of the track afoot. It turned out to be a real EveI Knievel show "a La francaise", with two downhill jumps that sen t the riders soaring clear over a roadway cut sideways across the hillside. If a truck had been left in the > ::E road under the jumps, the tires of the bikes wo uld never have come near it. You had to literally hold your breath and fly, or you wouldn't make it. If you didn't make it, which haJlpened in two cases, you were a hospital\job. With two such jumps per lap, for a total of 45 laps including practice, I was sure worried Bryan would get carried away sooner or later. . After a short week of recuperation, I had a long siege in the backseat of the car on the way to the next race near Lyons. I fell asleep, and when I woke up we were deep in the Alpine foothills. This background was really enchanting for a motocross. It was a full day's exercise just following the track up and down the hills and through the corners. My conclusion was: a great motocross track except (and this exception goes far) for the sharp rocks that made up most of the ground surface. The start was something to see and hear. There were some .50 riders ready to kick up the dirt and rocks, and sure enough a stone planted myoid man right square on the nose only halfway down the straigh t. This sen t him reeling back to the taiIend, but he quickly got it together and wound up a surprising 10th place. I had my paws crossed for the second moto, but it didn't help! He got invovled in a downhill pile-up the very first lap and pushed the Husky back to the pits for a bit of straightening out. The third moto couldn't be any worse, or so I thouJ(ht. On the 9th lap just as he had workea up to a respectable position behind Nicoll, his rear tire went. By this time there were already six riders invalided alongside the announcer's stand with flat tires. It made me laugh. In the willner's circle the top riders to escape mishap were Pippola, Finland; Kalberer, Switzerland; and Dave Nicoll, England. I was lucky to get a pat on the head that night! I'll be doing my best to boost the morale this week and I'll keep you posted on any progress.
