.... "Z,'" . W.~. 5'0•••• of " I ...i' .... '" - ••, ••,. J•• ;o, D.,s" SOMIS, CAL., May 2, 1971 - Not to discredit the excellent riding of numerous fine riders at Bay Mare's Junior weekend, Ken Zahrt and Danny Wade created an unusual amount of confusion and excitement for specator and riders alike. Zahrt, riding for a new sponsor, Woodland Hills Sports Cycle, took it all Saturday in the 125 Jr. division, apparently not satisfied with his accomplishmen t, he returned Sunday equipped with his newly acquired 250cc Bultaco (a first time 250cc race for Zahrt). His first mota drew him a "backward start" for an alleged "flagjumping" violation. Starting south while some 45 riders started north left Zahrt dead last going up the hill. To the astonishment of all, 6 laps and 15 minutes later, Zahrt took the checkered flag in second place just seconds behind the leader. A fouled plug cansed him to just fmish his second rna to and as the third and final race approached, everyone stood to watch this "unknown wizard" attempt to put it all together. Zahrt blasted from the middle of the pack into the front runners and by the 4th lap, was doing his thing too easily, and fmally, won his first 250cc mota taking a second overall. Another, and probably the most confusing, suprise was watching the Open Junior sitting - front wheels in ditch - awaiting the green flag. Down at the far end of the starting line was a bike that surely appeared out of place; nearly blocked from view and towered by 360 and 400cc Maicos, Huskies and numerous other bikes, sat a tiny blue 125 DKW with a smiling rider by the name of Danny Wade. Feeling sure Wade was lost or maybe confused,. starter Chuck Ferguson questioned Danny about his immediate whereabouts. After a brief exchange of words, the starter wandered away with a look of puzzlement about his face. Two . > :< ~ w Z W ...J (.) >(.) .Junior -Am Billed Bay Mare Park has gone through more changes than a person can keep up with, and recently it has changed again. The park is under new management after being closed for three months, and the new officials are attempting very hard to overcome the old Bay Mare image - Ulnconsistency," they call it. Chuck Ferguson, the manager-promo ter, has been staging more and more All-Junior days at the Somis, Calif., track and coming up May 16 will be the biggest yet. "We can guarantee 52500 in prizes and trophies in the first running of the Junior-Am Motocross," he states. "I've ~~':": .s 'Begi.nner Biggle' been lining up contingency, etc., and the total prize money will probably increase as the event nears." In an attempt to go all the way, also offered will be trophies to all finishers. "I feel that since this is being planned as the 'largest' event of its type, it would be fitting that large trophies be presented." Large is an understatement; the winner's brass measures 5'3" for all classes including mini-bikes. The junior-Am is for non-professionals, beginners, novices and intermediate riders Uumor). It's kind of like the "Biggie for Beginners." Fifteen local dealers are putting up most of the prizes while other firms are offering contingencies. Champion Helmets will award each winner a brand-new head-saver and each winner will also have his choice of a case of oil from Bardahl, Valvoline or Castrol. What is left over will be awarded to second, third and other fmishes as the supply lasts. A special dealer "mini-d une" race will also be staged to add to the day's fun. Mail entry (P.O_ Box 1132, Ventura, Cal. 93001) is $8 on a ftrst come basis; if available, post entries will go for $10 each until the motos are filled. Mini-bike entrants, all under 14 years, are charged only 52. ate: all entrants receive some sort of award. AMA, CMC and ACA officials will be on hand to verify riding status. More information can be obtained by calling 805/643-5858 or 529-1872 . • .aJa Wins minutes later Wade was last going up the staTt hill; 300 yards later when the dust cleared, Wade was in fourth place and tailgating a Maico in to submission. Two laps later, Scott Pelkey (Mai) led with Wade on his Hueneme-Cycle sponsored bike second. Thus was the order of their fmish. Wade's second mota was a repeat of splendid riding ability but his getting caugh t up in the pack cost him valuable time and he only managed a fourth. As with Zahrt, Wade gave the spectator something to watch for and in his third mota he passed some 10-12 big bikes on the first hill turn. By the time half a lap had past. Wade was fourth and charging. An exciting pursuit followed for the next 4 laps and on the last lap, Wade pulled a tigh t tum causing a bewildered rider to abandon bike and course. The checkered flag dropped Wade in third for the mo to and a second overall in the mighty Open class. Mark down on your junior Calendar the date of May 16. That is the day for the junior-Am race here at Bay Mare Park. A total of at least 2500 worth of trophies and contingency has already been lined up for all beginner and Junior competi tors.
