. > ::;: ~ w Z W ..J U > U By John Grout Photos by Racing Photos VALENCIA, CAL., May 2, 1971 While avalanching his way to six straight wins during the running of today's all.junior, $500 purse motocross at Indian Dunes Park, young Mark Abbatoye of Saugus was declared an easy winner of both the 125 and 250 contests. After a total of 345 entries.had poured through the Dunes' gates, it was decided to run each division for a longer period of time during tWO preliminary motos; then, the top ten from each cia.,; would roll to the starting line for a main event. That gave the large group of paying spectators a chance to witness five different finales. When Abbatoye, who had completely dismantled the 125 division "C n bunch, got to the starting banner for the lightweight Main, he found himself facing - among others - Charlie Mott (Pen) and Bob Garcia (Bul) both of whom had scored impressive victories against the "A" and "B" groupings. Bot it was the Rickman· Flyer, Abbatoye, who went zipping along the crest of the hill directly in front of the start line, and he had the rest of the crew in tow... And he was doing it on a Yamaha. Mott, Garcia and a red-hot Rick Salmon (Yam) were all in a position at MAVRICK one time or another to take pot shots at the high·sailer, but they found themselves rebuffed. His one·sided victory over the 250 clan couldn't have left a dry eye on the old reservation. I t was a surprising, C·Z· mounted Jon Miller who pressured early but when the cycles roared by the final flag, Mark had once again proven his lotal dominance, this time on a Rickman. Miller got a 2nd, while Ronnie Rondell (Hus) and Jimmie Hale (Bul) were all wrapped-up in a vivid battle for 3rd an,d 4th. The Open Main saw Jack Harter (C-Z) tie a loop on Randy Burak (Gre) and Steve Rauch (C·Z). The expected bout between Bob Kane, recently returned after any injury, and Harter failed to materialize. Kane, a winner twice during the elimination bouts, re·wrenched his knee. Joyce Soyka - the racers' racer, who'll never pinch you in a letdown attitude galloped her all new Zundapp-Rickman to a grand slam, Powder Puff record over Debbie Salmon (Yam) and' Hodaka·mounted Lynne Brown. While Johnny Volkman (Bul) was the dar!'!J0rse that uI:set the cart of apples in the 100 Main Event. Danny Sanchez and Joe Granatelli, who hails from the S.T.P. super-slip family, powered their individual paths to second and third on a pair of uRATS."
