EI Montadero ; (Continued from page 3) task of slowing or stopping the machine ::;; as long as there was something under~ neath into which the knobbies could w bite. Repeated crossings of an axle-deep ~ stream did cause some fading of both oJ front and rear brakes. However, after a ~ few applications, the brakes dried and U full stopping power was restored. The multi-plate wet clutch never faltered even after considerable intentional slil'ping while maneuvering up a ~ steep hillside on a narrow, twisting trail. The transmission performed exceptionally well, too, as shifting remained positive and easy even after a long afternoon of riding. At one time, shifting got to be a little rough, but a check for chain tension revealed the only bothersome problem on the machine. The chain had stretched during the first hour or so of trailing and had jumped. over the rubber groove in the springloaded tensioner leaving a .disconcerting amount of slack. The chain repeatedly defied the tensioner until some of the slack was taken up. After that quick operation, we had no more problems with the chain and shifting resumed its original smoothness. The most pleasant aspect of the EI Montadero was the positioning of handlebars, footpegs and seat that gave the bike the feel of a motocross rna- • SPECIFICA11ONS: ENGINE Bore and stroke Displacement Compression ratio Brake horsepower 85 x 64 rom. 362.8 cc. 10: I 32.6 HP at 6000 CARBURETOR , GEARBOX Ratios .4 speed I .0.405:1 Ill. 0.925:1 11.0.645:1 IV. 1.26:1 CLUTCH Multiple plate in oil bath TRANSMISSION Primary transmission. . . . . . .. Control was just as easily maintained from the standing position as from the soft, wide se,at and only in the tightest going were the 35 3/4 ·inch handlebars a liability. In short, the 1971 EI Montedero is a machine capable of bloWing the smaller bikes in the weeds on any enduro. Mechanically speaking, it's all therethe power, the suspension and geometry to make the power manageable, and the brakes to curb the power. The only thing lacking is the rider who has what it takes to put it all together. .32 rom. Deb took a beautiful first place, followed by Vicki Conley in second. Jeff Ward was out to really take all in the Mini class and did just that. D. Miller, on his Hodaka mini came in with a second. Although Jeff is probably Elsinore's smallest rider, his ability is great. Besides the outstanding job he did in the Mini class, he rode in the 100 N. Nov. class to take a close second behind G. Juala. The 100 Novices saw B. Smith take first. W. Badraum and D. Callaway battled it out for second with Badraum taking it. D. Horton look a win over A. The 250 Ex. starts showed Randy Smith first off the line, but C. Guizzle's Bultaco shot by and held the lead to the flag with M. Peters finishing second. Rob MacKewen experienced mechanical trouble which forced him out of the Special Expert competition. M. Hagoski showed to be the eventual winner over J. Hunt, who held his own for second. Bob Hosford was back on the track to top the night off by winning Sweepstakes beautifully by a full sweeper. (Results on page 26) New Moto-Cross Track 1st Events At Santa Maria oo~~~~~,~~~!.:.~td.
