Wilson, Wingfield Win By Dave Askins EL PASO, TEX., April 25, 1971 - The El Paso Motocross Park held its second race and its tint with a cash purse. Money was given for the rust three places in the 250 and Open Expert classes. This, plus a relatively calm day, made for some very exciting racing. In the first 250 Expert moto Dick Wingfield put his Maico into the lead off the line and kept it there to the finish. John Foster and Bryan Treadway, Maico and Montesa, staged a close race for second and third not far behind. In the second moto Wingfield failed to come around after the rlTsl lap; Foster picked up the win and Tom Wahler came in for second on a Bultaco. Wingfield's problems were solved for the third round; he easily picked up the win and Wahler again came in for second. This gave a final finishing order of Wingfield, Foster and Wabler. The Open Expert class was won by Lanny Wilson on a new Suzuki 400. Lanny won the first two motos handily but ran into trouble in the third. Harry West, who had mechanical troubles earlier, rmally got his big Maico running right for the fmal moto. Wilson got the jump off the line but was hard pressed by West until the final lap when West slipped by for the win. In the overaIJ standings and picking up the cash following Wilson were Randy Dodson (Hus), and Mike Ahern (Mai). The race promoters, EI Paso Motocross Inc., promised more money for more classes for their next race on . May 16. This race should draw the best riders from West Texas and New Mexico. Winter Hits Season Opener By Will Palmer PRESCOTT, ARIZ., April 18, 1971 Riders from throughout the state popped up at the first race of the 1971 season and what greeted them was an example of what Winter should have been like, not what it has been. Very cold temperatures, a knifing wind, and light blowing snow made the day a tough one for 127 riders and their fans at Slaughterhouse Gulch. Highlights of the action were found in very close competition and outstanding performances by riders in practically every race. Young Wayne Kraus of Phoenix put on a beautiful exhibition in the mini·bike race, showing why he is one of Arizona's rmest mini-riders. Four Powderpuffers opened their season with a g.ood battle between Sharon Palmer and Liz Wouter. Sharon took all three heats after a strong surge from Liz and took home the gold. The many 100cc Novices were split into 2 division with Gary Jackson winning the first division and Brad Mueller the second. Doug Schnieder battled his brother Paul and two other 100cc Amateurs to take that class win. A rough batch of 125 Novices matched bumps and bikes for the trophy and season poin ts and after their 3 heats Tom Baker garnered the win. Expert Paul Rosenfeld had his share of problems as he ran with the 125 Amateurs. Bruce Miller, Cliff Allison and Marlow Parks _topped the field in that order. The -usual mass of 250 Novice riders made a class split necessary and both divisions provided the frozen crowd with a show that would warm the heart of the littlest lover of big crowds and loud noises. Steve Bailey topped group one, while Ken Campbell won' the second. Jeff Coker turned in one of the rmest rides of his career to win the 250 MOlO IMPORTS co. 1274 ElSt Colorado Blvd. Pasadena. The Open Novice battle was s.ettled when Steve Wilks emerged from the fray with an armload of gold_ The Open Amateur race was a real donnybrook with a top notch field of 5 riders. Action was so close and the pace so furious that on the last lap of the third heat tempers were a bit short, but cooler heads prevailed to prevenl any problems. After the fun was over Mike Ellsworth had, edged Allison to take lOp honors. The Mile High M.C. had made a few changes in their half·mile TT course and a new tum and short straightaway coming off th e lower esses proved the favorite of the majority of riders. N ow in its third year of sponsoring races at this track, the small but highly organized club will stage their next effort May 16.
